Steering wheel vibrates in 2000 Corolla Sign In

Hi

My 2000 Corolla has around 137 K miles on it. It is a stick shift ( manual transmission).
Off late I have noticed a vibration / jerk pattern which I can sense in my steering wheel.
It drives fine at all speeds ( These days I have tried up to 65 mph), But I have seen some things that concern me.

1) I have felt good amount of vibration in the steering wheel off late. I am guessing that the vibration is present always, but I am not sure if I can differentiate it from nominal vibrations in this car. The vibration is least noticeable when I am accelerating from 0 - 35/40 mph and most noticeable when I put the car to neutral and break while slowing down for a light. I also feel that the car halts quicker than normal, when put on neutral without applying brakes.

2) The car quickly drifts to the left when the steering wheel is left to itself.

3) Some kind of vibration is felt in the foot as well.

4) When the car is still, and on a slightly downward slope ahead (neutral without hand brake or leg brakes applied) , I guess the car doesn't move but I occasionally hear a noise. This noise is very similar to one that we hear when hand brake is applied initially to park a car on a slope.

I am not sure what is going on. Any ideas ?

Also, I would appreciate if I could get some idea about how much it would cost me to fix it.

Thanks
Raja

Re: Steering wheel vibrates in 2000 Corolla Sign In

There could be other issues involved but from your description the front brakes are a problem and need total inspection - like remove them and really look and replace as needed. Rear brakes should be checked periodically as well but don't rank high on making the steering feel you speak of.

As disc brakes wear the lining the piston(s) move outward to be in place. When and pads are allowed to wear way too low pistons come out of their bore and can go cock-eyed and not let go much or at all.

Total wear out sometimes (rare but happens) don't necessarily grind wildly.

Again - could be more but so far this seems like a brake issue to be dealt with asap! I'm not there looking at them but I wouldn't be surprised if this didn't need.... new pads, calipers, and a good idea to replace the rubber flex hoses. Unless a very good DIYer - get professional help or have it available,

I have to agree with Tom. The most common brake problems I've seen on these cars is the caliper pins rust up and the caliper won't "slide" back when brakes are released causing them to hang up. A sure way is to take the car for a drive, park it, and feel the wheels. If they are really hot, the brakes are overheating.

Thanks Steve! I just overlooked that ever so important and common issue and shame on me for not mentioning it AND missed saying rotors would probably be needed as well IF (likely) a brake issue as the primary cause,

You nailed the brakes Tom. I merely expanded on your diagnosis. Give yourself a pat on the back and have a cold one on me. lol

Hi Tom and Steve,

I appreciate your prompt response. I will surely be looking out for the brakes when I give it for repair.

As of now, I am new to the area ( 19401, NW Phily) I am in and am looking out for reliable auto repair shops.

Any advice regarding this is more than welcome.

Thanks again Tom and Steve

Raja,

When new to an area to find about anything ask friends, neighbors, co-workers for assistance + suggestions. I believe most shops are good and play fair. Also good to introduce yourself and know who you are dealing with and if happy get to know the tech by name. Can be a thankless biz and nice when good things work both ways.

Clues to competence:

ASE certified techs employed.

Motor clubs like AAA and others may have suggested places for you.

BBB Association could tell of serious complaints with shops or any concern.

Opinion: Truly lousy shops won't be around long. If a place has been in biz a while that should be a good sign.

Chain places or Dealers are not a guarantee of good or bad anything. They are subject to who works there.

Good luck,

T
