Squeak when I turn the sterring wheel Sign In

My 2008 Kia Rio, 65,000 miles (yes just out of warranty), makes a rubber like squeaking sound when you turn the steering wheel left or right. No noise when I move the car up or down or when you are driving straight (even over speed bumps). When I first start the car and drive there is no noise when you turn, then after about 2 miles it starts squeaking when you turn. At first, it seems you have to make a full right or left turn to have it squeak, just a lane change won't make it squeak. Steering is fine, hardly any steering wheel play, and the force needed to turn the wheel is the same as when it was new. Help! Just trying not to get hosed when I go to a repair shop. thanks guys! Wink

Re: Squeak when I turn the sterring wheel Sign In

Just to rule out if this is being steered to the end of steering travel when this happens and only at that extreme? That small point is just to say don't try to steer a vehicle (any) beyond where it stops - some do and it isn't good for anything.

Next unless this is interior parts at the steering wheel and column is to be under the car when it is expected to happen and isolate what item(s) and where that naturally turn, pivot to allow steering.

Noises are warnings and early is better. Probably will take ability to steer it wheels with weight of vehicle and with them free supported by body to isolate it,

OK just to let you know what happened. I went to a fantastic auto repair place they looked all over the steering mechanisms and found the problem. It was a part of the air bag mechanism in the steering wheel. New part from Kia cost $200, labor taxes shop fees etc. $100, so a total of $300. I am happy with that, plus I know my front end mechanisms are working A-1.

Yea yea yea done!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great! I'd be psyched to know air bag anything isn't getting screwed up. Thanks for the report of the fix,

Glad to see it is fixed tooWink

We had a lady customer a few months ago that was trying to maneuver around in our parking lot with her old B body Buick. The parking lot is kind of tight and she had the wheel cranked. You could hear the power steering pump groaning and the noise of the bracket vibrating. For some reason the PS hose decided to separate from its crimp and expel all the fluid forcefully onto the asphalt. You can still the see crime scene today and people always ask us why their vehicle is leaking if they are parked over the spot when they come to pick them up.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
