Rubbing Noise? Sign In

Hi, I've recently heard a rubbing noise on my car when driving. Its coming from the passenger side and sounds as though its coming from one of the wheels. It's consistent and sounds similar to the rhythmical noise of a train (I know that sounds strange but it's the best way I can think of trying to describe it). Someone has suggested it might be the brake pads that have worn down but surely the noise would only then occur when I put the brake on? Could it be the wheel bearing?

Thanks

TODAY! MAKE SURE YOUR WHEELS ARE ON TIGHT! Then I think from your description you may in fact need a wheel bearing. Brake noises can do things but usually change when you are using them or not.

Be safe and get help if needed. There's only so much a keyboard can do,

Thanks for replying.

Is the wheel bearing complicated to replace? Is it expensive?

Thanks

The're all different. Some easy some require a press! - then an alignment. You need to post the Make, Model, and year of this vehicle. Some you will need air tools or they would be a real battle.

Bad bearings usually sound like a knobby tire sound but bets are off. A good one you can spin the wheel and there should be no sound and near no freplay. It's more likely a brake problem is making a "rubbing" sound.

Certainly rule out any physical parts rubbing on a tire or wheel.

This could be a safety issue and if getting worse get pro help - someone who does alignments too will save you from two stops.
