Rough sound when starting car in cold weather Sign In

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla with 80k miles.

When I start it in the morning when the weather is cold, (below 40f ish) it makes a rough starting sound. After that it seems to run ok, and it doesn't make the sound when I start it again later in the day or when it is warm out. Any idea what it might be?

I took a video of the sound at the link below.

Can't make that play doesn't matter just some questions first.
Is this noise only cranking time or continue after for a while? Cranking only would be one direction to find after starter motor is done, another,

I uploaded it to YouTube

It doesn't continue. After I turn into on, a couple seconds later the noise comes for a second or two, then it goes away and doesn't return.

Sounds like the starter is hanging up in the flywheel. You can try removing the starter and lubing the drive gear and shaft but you may ultimately need a new starter.

OK, what I hear is a starter motor itself has a "raspy" sound only when engaged. Either way it would matter to tend to.
I'd take the motor out whole and take a good look at the gear just how it look and where it contacts (just call it a flywheel) when cranking. It may not match well probably because of the starter "drive" which comes with new/reman starters.
It could already have been replaced and just bushings worn. If you find it isn't tightly fastened that would be a reason.
It works now I do suggest dig into it and find out why for sure. The risk is that little gear that engages the flywheel could wreck both the larger flywheel gear is nasty to fix vs the starter.
Yes, you can with some know how make it work off car (starter) yourself or have it tested not so sure that would show the real problem. If all wet or lack of lube where starter drive throws that little gear at flywheel your call to try to lube it or just get another totally,
