Power steering fluid leaking into Air Intake?!?! Sign In

I have had quite a problem with my 1994 Toyota 4Runner. The power steering went out about 8 months ago and I did not have the money or the time to take it in and get it fixed. Finally, about a month ago I took it in to have the 'leak' fixed and the mechanic replaced the power steering pump. It worked for about two days and then it went out again. I took it back and he replaced the hose that comes off of the pump and it worked for a little while and then went out again. I took it back for a third time and my 4Runner was there for 3 days while the mechanic tried to figure out where it was leaking. Finally, he called me and told me to come and pick it up because he had no idea where it was leaking. I picked it up and filled it with power steering and noticed that when I fill it up I get smoke coming out of the exhaust and it drains in a matter of minutes. There are no puddles or leaks anywhere and I am suspecting that it is leaking into the engine. Will all of this fluid that is leaking into my engine cause serious damage and what will I need to do to fix the problem? I am hoping it is not too expensive to fix because I cannot afford a major overhaul of my engine right now. Please help!

I am not too familiar with 4Runners. My question is, does the power steering get an assist off the brake booster? Check to see if there is a vacuum line going from the booster to the power steering. If there is one, disconnect the vacuum line and cap it off. You won't have power steering when you drive, but if the fluid no longer drains then it is proved the vacuum inside the booster is sucking fluid through the line and that is how it's getting inside the engine. You would either need a new booster or check valve at this point. Good luck and please keep us posted on what happens.

P.S. The fluid can foul out the spark plugs and ruin them. But, you say it empties in a few minutes, that much fluid that fast concerns me that the engine could possibly hydro lock and that can cause big damage.

On some models toyota uses vaccum pressure switches on the power steering pumps. look for a sw attached to your p/s pump with two vaccum lines on it. this sw opens when senses pressure allowing air to enter the intake to raise the engines rpms to compensate for the extra load. some call it a smart vaccum leak. if your sw broke internaly it wiilsuck fluid out of your pump in to the engine. hope this helps. gluck.
