Oil pressure alert after oil change Sign In

Hello guys,

I am kind of new to car maintenance so please be patient if I ask some stupid questions.

Yesterday I changed the oil to my car and today while driving I noticed the low oil pressure light on.
I got worried so I drove back home. After around 5-6 kms the light switched off.

Some more Info's about the problem and possible causes:

- the oil level is normal... 3 quarters etween low and full

- I changed only the oil but not the oil filter

- this morning I noticed a little oil leaking from the plug... I tightened it a bit more and its not leaking but I am a bit scared to start the car and maybe damage the engine

- last thing but probably one big error... While draining the oil I had the very stupid idea of turning the motor on to warm up the oil.. So the engine did run for 30 second with little-no oil and the oil plug open

Any idea what could be the problem and how to fix it?

Thank you in advance

Oh man. Big mistakes - hope upon hope 30 seconds wasn't too much as it didn't have oil pressure then!
Drain plugs: OMG again - some require a new gasket each time they are touched - does yours?
Why just oil and not the filter? That probably emptied when running engine with drain plug out so would require the oil of a full oil and filter change.

Check level again and again after it has sat level for at least 10 minutes.

Probably best to go buy a new drain plug and gasket now. Something there went wrong by you or perhaps before you. If messed up threads now or even think so don't touch it and take it a real shop that can repair the threads or know what options you have,

Re: Oil pressure alert after oil change Sign In

Thanks for the reply.

The plug uses a full metal washer that shouldn't need to changed every time.

I didn't change the oil filter cause simply I cannot find one around where I am living now.

I will add more oil and wait and mesaure the oil level again.

What I find strange is that the low oil pressure indicator switched off after driving 6 kms... Any idea why?

Re: Oil pressure alert after oil change Sign In

You posted in "Engine and Car Noises" section so asking if it is or was making noise while light was on? It's off now but took 6km just a maybe it stuck being so low and warm/hot engine was a reason.

You said 30 seconds. Seriously - look at a watch and see how long 30 seconds really is! That if accurate is a very long time for an engine (any) to run without oil pressure.

DO NOT OVERFILL OIL EITHER! Drain plug needed tightening you said. It a metal gasket most if tightened properly do not need touching again. Over tightening or cross threaded is another problem may have already happened before and others just keep tightening up the plug till thread of oil pan are wasted and need rethreading or up to a new oil pan.

Doesn't take all that much to destroy an engine with just not changing oil properly. If the warning still works with key on, engine off and goes out now quickly upon start up you might be ok but unless you totally have no idea how tight to make a drain plug there's something still wrong now or for the next time it's touched and I suggest you tend to it now,
