Metal Noise when Starting - 2005 GMC Yukon Denali (6.0L V8) Sign In

Vehicle is making a noise when starting - sometimes it is louder than others and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. It drives fine, doesn't make the noise once it's running.

Here is the noise: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h-S_lg86UOXd2z2C8Q8myeoeS3glNSY7/view?usp=sharing

Any ideas? Maybe the starter is going bad or loose and not making clean contact with the flywheel?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, sounds like the starter is not disengaging. You could try removing it a greasing the drive and gears. May or may not work.

Great user name! To the problem, I can't make your video show without changing my device so by description noise only while starter motor is working include these reasons + what I forgot:
* Somehow it's loose? Check if by hand or tools.
* Most all are bushings not hard set bearings so if too worn it's gone needs another.
* There can be shields for it that have been bent for assorted reasons can pry them out of the moving part's way. If plastic (there was a run of that but too old for this) cut it away solved that.
* If all else seems normal if you can watch it (all cautions please) with a helper cranking it and observing it you might plain see the reason? IDK till observed.
* Highest chance (my guess) if it works and a noise only something is bent or rubbing during the time it's cranking. It throws a small gear "starter drive" at a ring gear (AKA flywheel) and retracts instantly when not triggered by one wire empower by simple 12V power a spring makes it default to retract mode.

IF that tossing it for new (if pretty sure go new not rebuilt) ends the problem.

See if another has an idea or if this is a known issue for this engine I don't happen to know if chronic with this you happen to be the first!

haiderali,

This is not your question. If you need help with something, then start a new question of your own.
