Loud grinding/rubbing noise Sign In

We are buying a 2007 Dodge Dakota V6 crewcab 4WD,17000miles from a dealer. When we drove it there is a very loud grinding/rubbing noise while in 4WD & turning sharply to the left. It is not noted when turning right or when in 2WD. The dealer says it is rubbing on the mudflap. If that is correct , why don"t we hear it when turning right & not while in 2WD ?

Probably a bearing and the shift of weight when turning makes it show itself. Mudflap?! Get serious - if the dealer knew that's all it was then why isn't something that stupid fixed already?

If you still want to deal with a place like that then have them fix it before any purchase or keep looking. That's also a ton of miles for a 5 year old vehicle so if you really want it have it checked out by another shop not involved with this sale but evaluate overall condition. If this dealer won't allow that then I wouldn't buy the thing,

Before you buy, have your mechanic check it over. You sure don't want to be buying a money pit.

I smell that fish with this. Before signing anything or even bothering to take it somewhere for professional inspection ask the dealer for the papers on this vehicle which is a good idea for about any used vehicle purchase unless you want something so cheap you just wanted parts off of it.

Salvage title, repair history and probably a CarFax would be informative.

Around me vehicles with miles like that traded for new perhaps get wholesaled out to auction dirt cheap. At those auctions even the used dealers struggle to rule out the money pit vehicles and can't do a lot of checking out much more than what can be seen and heard and take a risk of getting burnt themselves but are (if successful at it) factoring in the risks of some wild expenses as they are mandated by law to give you at least some warranty based on age and miles so may be exempt and would say so here clearly.

Free to check BBB on the dealer too. How long have they been there? Is the office on wheels meaning that joint can easily just move and rename a biz type thing.

Still smelling that fish!

Hi & thanks for your quick reply. Is 17,000 miles high mileage for a 2007 truck ? That's only 3000 +/- mi per year. I too think the dealer should have known about the noise. Will have him check the bearings.

Thanks for your quick answer.SOmething doesn't sound right to me either (I'm the wife). Is 17000 mi a lot for a 5yr old vehicle? We thought that was good. Also we do have the Carfax which shows 2 owners but no accidents, flooding etc events. It also has a shimmy at about 63 mph. So, you think we should look elsewhere?

Re: Loud grinding/rubbing noise Sign In

Dang - sorry about that. I read/interpreted that as 170,000 not 17K which is LOW! Very low. Still, info on why it's that low (all off road being a 4X4 wouldn't be a great thing) and or if so great why did prior owner give up or what? Accident, repossessed - anything for a reason and some are good valid reasons.

Still mandates checking out as that noise could be something very expensive - can't know from here,

Re: Loud grinding/rubbing noise Sign In

You had posted before my reply so I'll add that you should if all checks out make certain on a vehicle w that low of miles that stated problems noticed will be fixed to your satisfaction on the bill of sale.

Take your time if you possibly can. Better to lose out on a potential real deal on a low mile anything than to buy a money pit and two owner already with the low miles may be fine but just curious about that.

If you leave a deposit state that it is subject to an independent inspection at your expense (perhaps a $100 +/-) or refund the deposit.

Homework first pays off,

Re: Loud grinding/rubbing noise Sign In

Best of luck. I used to do those inspections for folks and a write up on what found as best I could. It's not a game as there's bucks at stake to get the wrong vehicle as most of us know,
