Loud Thud Followed by rhythmic thumping and piece of Serpentine Belt Flopping Around Sign In

Year of vehicle 2002
Make of vehicle Saab
Model of vehicle 95 3.0T
Mileage/Kilometers 108,000

I was driving home the other day and heard a loud thud under hood followed by thump, thump thump thump. At first I thought something fell off and I was dragging it as I drove. When I got home I opened up the hood and saw that the serpentine belt was jagged on one side and had a piece of it hanging off, but the piece looked like a long piece of twine, not rubber. The belt is still on, and the piece of twine hangs off going round and round and round. Can anyone suggest what the initial thud was? I'm calling around getting estimates on serpentine belt and tensioner replacement, does this sound like the most likely cause?

One other piece of information that may be related or coincidental. I had just got my car back the day before from having the crank shaft position sensor replaced.

Belt probably misinstalled. The rope is just the hidden material beaten up with rubber missing. That or a problem with pulley(s) or misadjusted if this one is adjustable or just plain too old and it's time was up but those things you and maintenance should have replaced along the way. If a new one lines up and nothing else was damaged by the whipping around of part of the belt a new one should be the end of the problem but requires inspection too,
