1995 Ford Contour
2.0 liter
63,000 miles
This car was used as a vacation car for many years and was not driven often. I bought it and have put about 35,000 in the last 30 months.

Over the last 1500 miles or so I have noticed a humming noise that sounds like it is coming from the front left. The hum became audible at about 40 mph. Yesterday I began to notice a vibration from the front at about 60mph and the hum is now audible down to about 20mph.

We raised the car and had no play in the wheel pushing and pulling the top and bottom. Also, the c/v boots are intact and I have no grease strewn about the underside. We decided to rotate all of the tires: Front left to right rear and front right to left rear. The sound persisted.

At this point all I can think to do is start with the bearings and then move on the the c/v and/or half shaft. Please let me know if further info is needed.

Thanks You!

Re: Humming and vibration Sign In

Might be a bearing as they won't have play long before they make symptoms. Usually a bad one will be better or worse on turns while going along.

Hoist wheels and spin them - not just checking for free play. They pretty much should be silent.

If rotating the tires changed what you think is the location then tires need careful inspecting too.

CV joints generally don't do much for noise going straight ahead but rather more noticed on sharp turning with some accelleration they frequently start at a crackling sound,
