Horribly loud squeaking when warmed up? Help! Sign In

I have a 1990 Chevrolet 1500. Pretty old, but it\'s been in pretty good care. Recently however, I\'ve gotten a horribly loud squeaking noise when the engine gets hot. When it\'s in park, the noise gets slightly quieter and quicker, and when in drive, the noise gets slower but louder. And when I apply the gas, I can\'t hear it until I start going a constant speed or am idling. So if anyone has any ideas at all, please help. Thanks

Heard from idling? Can you plain hear it better with hood open? Perhaps a belt driven pulley, loose belt. If suspect, remove belt(s) and spin items by hand if belt was tight enough to begin with a pulley should show itself at bad,

I've never gotten the hood open myself while I could hear the noise, because it's much worse while in drive. I was thinking it was a loose belt too, but I was looking at it with my father and he suspected either the PS pump or the water pump.
I was hoping that the answer would be clearer when I said how the noise got worse when in drive, and is gone when applying the gas.. Would that point to anything?

Rule out loose belt with engine off and cool. Just pick the longest stretch between two pulleys and see how much deflection there is. If alternator has fins you shouldn't be able to turn those by hand - strong clue.

PS would usually act up just sitting still and turning make more noise.

If too quiet just idling AND I STRESS DON'T DO THIS UNLESS ALL CAUTION, SAFETY, SITUATION WITH COMPETENT HELP you could get a person to set park brake hard, hold brakes hard, put it in gear and put some (go easy) force on it to simulate load of driving. DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF VEHICLE BUT TO SIDE AND NOTHING IN FRONT OF IT TO HIT - BE TOTALLY OUT OF HARM'S WAY! I hate to suggest that rather basic test so don't and get help if not comfortable that you could do that and not for long - just a quick test.

Other is a mechanic's stethoscope can target a pulley or item with unusual noise but again you are dealing with a running engine with the risks of moving parts.

Belts off and no noise would be safe for quick test if all noise is gone then at least you know it is a belt driven item,

My dad and I did that exact test, actually, only to try to get the truck to warm up enough to get the noise though. But I guess I'll have to take the belt off and try to get the noise then. Only problem is, the only way to get the engine hot enough is to drive it. And driving without a belt.. you know. But I'll see what I can work out. Thanks for the help.

No - don't drive it around without the belt. Just quick to test in place!

Haha yeah, I'm not about to try that. I'll have to try to get it hot enough and turn it off and remove the belt quick enough.

Right. If serpentine with tensioner you can have those off in no time. Not sure for the year and dunno the engine yet.

I may be away from puter for a while so another may drop in with suggestions if more needed,
