Engine noise . What is it? Sign In

http://youtu.be/85wi4k96DYQ 2002 Grand Prix 3.8 only 99,000 miles Started making this noise shortly after oil change. Was told might be an exhaust leak. I have all the power runs fine RPMs right where they suppose to be. Just this dang noise. I only hear it at idle
..Doesn't go away when car warms up. Any Suggestions?

Sorry wasn't sure how to post video so you guys if you please could just copy and paste that link to watch the video

Try again with a link to the noise if possible as I can't make it show up at all? My end or your end devices not all the same of course. Copy/paste from browser should show as a link here.

About the noise anyway:

What makes you think having an oil change might have had anything to do with it? Who told you that it might be an exhaust leak and might be but someone who would know or checked it out?

Yes - Flex pipes, heat shields can and do show up with noises without warning many times.

Since you mentioned oil change and to me suggests checking all fluids, air filter is everything back together properly particularly air intake ducts work thru air filter?

Try again with the link to YouTube. This is now copy/pasted as to what it shows me with your link.........
">>No results found for http://youtu.be/85wi4k96DYQ.<<"

See the (. dot) between 'u' and 'b' of the word YouTube? When that show like that nothing will show on my machine?

Your link is fine. I made it live for you.

It's hard to determine that noise from the video alone. It sounds like it could be a water pump going oiut but that's just a maybe. I'd suggest taking the belt off and feeling each pulley as it spins by hand.

OK, got it and hard to tell as HT said. I too think a belt driven something. Take it off for a test. If quiet then spin items with engine off of course you should tell which item is the cause then.

Frankly, it seems obvious enough it wouldn't take a second with a pro ear hearing that in person,

Thanks for taking the time. I work at Napa a fellow employee suggested that it sounded like a leak in my exhaust somewhere could be making the engine noise or a bad sensor. But I get no codes on the car. It seemed to started shortly after an oil change I had done at jiffy lube. I usually do them my self but I was due and the weather wasn't cooperating around here. The sound itself isn't very loud if I rev the motor it gets louder until about 2500 rpms then kinda fades away. O just changed the air filter but the noise was already present. I have no loss of power at all. I did watch jiffy lube use the right oil I didn't leave the cars side. I did go back after hearing the sound they said if the oil change has anything to do with it the sound should go away around 1,000 miles after the change. I'm at about 1,800 now, and starting to worry.

Jiffy Wiffy told you WHAT! That't why they get such a great reputation and any like them.

Does your NAPA read codes? May not show on all issues.

If you suspect exhaust still with a GREAT pair of heavy duty like welding gloves but still engine on cooler side plug the exhaust with rag with a helper and listen for the noise up front might make it obvious to you.

Belt should be a cake walk and understand if weather or working outdoors is a problem trust me! That belt can be off all pulleys in no time even if one that you can't remove get it out of the way of all pulleys and quick just run it to see if it's quiet then. If not still spin and check pulleys. One making noise would be easy to find. Just make sure you put the belt back on exactly both the routing and perfectly back on pulleys.

? Did an oil change cause this? I actually doubt it and sometimes not. I've been with someone who went to one (any of them) and person below doing whatever and others above doing their thing - employee filled oil till it came out an oil cap like a couple gallons or whatever it would take that I wouldn't even do for fun to kill something.

Keep checking for source of that noise. Next or if you really know how is a listening rod or mechanic's stethoscope should target the noise,

Thanks for the advice! I'll get that belt off and give it a shot. This is my only car so hopefully driving it won't hurt it any more.

Re: Engine noise . What is it? Sign In

It's not helping it to wait any longer at all! If a bearing on a pulley - any - there's no telling what might be wrecked if it fell off.

Other thought on this is belt itself sometimes can make wild noise by itself. Some just suk and some might have had some unknown fluid leaking on it or spilled. Almost all would go away in 1,800 miles but if belt plain suks it can be the cause.

To test spray it just with some water and see if noise changes. If so dump that belt just because. I wont look up the part # if you work at NAPA ask for a brand that boasts "Quiet" even though about all NAPA belts have been fine for me. It was a couple super cheapo brands you'd swear engine was falling apart and just the belt!

OK - Some 3.8s you need to remove motor mount to change out the belt. That's where you could get in real trouble without competent help just to line up the mount again with helper. If that type maybe get it done for you if you find belt is the issue alone and might be?

Just wanted to put it out there my check engine light has never came , not sure if that would eliminate anything. I'm getting a scope tomorrow from a friend to listen to my pulleys.

Don't count on a check engine light to tell you where a noise is. Do the checks already suggested or have someone hear it in person. Technology is great but not so great as being there for this stuff,

You know, you've listened to or noticed this noise for so long now in a feeble attempt just to isolate what it is, take a video, borrow this or that and read codes for a noise that could be destroying this engine for no good reason so can find out for free what it is.

This should have been over with right away or at least known what it is so you can plan an attack if it means actually having to pay someone either to know what or do it. YOU ARE WASTING VALUABLE TIME!

You said you work at a NAPA and most are excellent IMO. If you don't know of a shop that's a customer of the place at least who would look at it for you I'm sure confused about that. May not work that way where you are but would here where I am. Who or where is the store's best customer for a shop - a real shop not Wiffy Lube?

If NAPA doesn't loan tools and doesn't here (MA) AutoZone's do and others like that. Take the damn belt off as already said and if you aren't capable have that much done while you wait - minutes for that test alone then move on if that reveals nothing.

At least check your antifreeze level at radiator or know it's full and look for leaking at the water pump as this does sound like that. If that or another falls off, breaks all kinds of other parts, overheats you are risking the whole car!
