Dodge Neon acts very weird when not moving Sign In

Year of vehicle: 2003
Make of vehicle: Dodge
Model of vehicle: Neon
Engine size: 2.4 (pretty sure)
Mileage/Kilometers: 120 000 km or about 75 000 miles

Hey there people. First, I really appreciate the help. My car has been acting very weird for about 2 months now. I realised this at a red light. So what it does is when I'm on drive(it's an automatic transmission), neutral or reverse but the car isn't moving, so like at a red light, a stop or anywhere else, the cars kind of like does little bumps and jumps a bit (the car itself doesn't move) and the motor/engine/car does a sound that correlates the bumps. Sometimes the lights goes down just a bit when the jumps happens. These actions really rarely happens while driving but can happen sometimes.

I got a new batterie and got a new distributator a week ago. The sound stopped a few days but came back 3 days ago.

I'm not sure where I had to post this so I put it here, thanks for all the help you can offer and I can answer any questions about the car if you have any. I also tried to do a video about it, but you dont hear it well and also you can't feel the bumps/jumps in the video.

Thanks again.

Re: Dodge Neon acts very weird when not moving Sign In

First thing to do would be to get a good code reading. Seems so far like it is unable to hold a "normal" idle speed and so low it doesn't move, lights dim as engine is running such low RPMs and what you feel is it's about to stall.

Cold out - it gets this cold and cars deal with it. You can forgive some for a few minutes especially when parked outdoors then they should behave and it isn't.

Do you have an RPM gauge on this and what does it read? Temp gauge and what does that do as well?

Sounds correlating to bumps doesn't add up to me yet.

Also, if a "memory" saver wasn't used in replacing battery codes than might be in wait are probably lost for a while or if your engine light is illuminated there definitely are codes to be read.

In the meantime for a test as I really think it's idling too low and anytime you are not touching the gas pedal it's too low also try holding it up just to about 700 or so and see if all you symptoms go away. Not a fix, just to see if that fixes the symptoms.

Not sure what is available to you for code reading but tell the person that battery has been disconnected for new and how long ago both time and miles/kms as it matters. If you had to reset the clock or radio pre-sets it lost some memory changing it out,

Re: Dodge Neon acts very weird when not moving Sign In

Thanks for the answer. My RPM and temperature seem normal, the only thing that is weird is my gas. It moves a lot. What I mean is sometimes it goes up, sometimes it says I lost a quarter or my tank in a min, etc.

Cold could have a link to it, because I live in Canada.

I'm not sure about what you said about the test. So I should put on on neutral and go to 700 RPM to see what it does?

Re: Dodge Neon acts very weird when not moving Sign In

I'm in similar temps as you West of Boston and doesn't matter how cold once vehicle is warmed up.

All symptoms point to RPMs not holding properly for the conditions so need some accuracy of what you see. Not sure if gas gauge is because of being on a slope and normal or a clue of wiring troubles to dash and other controls for the engine/trans right now.

By holding RPMs up I mean left foot on brake and right foot just nudging up RPM to 650-700 or so in drive (nothing in your way) to see if that takes all the problems away and let go of brake if it moves car forward at all or still nothing?

Need to narrow this down some or get some professional help. About anytime something isn't right it's best to be fast to fix than wait,

Re: Dodge Neon acts very weird when not moving Sign In

Ok so I did the test today and yes it only happens when I'm below about 1000 RPM. Except when I have been driving for a long time(over 20 min mayve) it can start doing it while I'm driving! So what I thought was that every time there is a red light I would go on neutral and just press the gas so it doesn't do the bumps. It worked a few time until this one time when my car started backing up on neutral. When I arrived home later I restarted and yes my car would go reverse if I was on neutral and wouls go faster on reverse if I pressed on gas as if it(the engine) was mistaken R and N.

Could this problem be a transmission problem? This is geting weird because nobody knows what's wrong and I can't find anything on the web on it.

I will give you an example of something else sometimes it does. Lets say I'm going to turn right at corner and I press on gas to go forward, sometimes it kinds of doesnt really go on until it kinda does a big bump and then it goes on forward.

Somebody suggested that it could be something involving that my car stalls.

Re: Dodge Neon acts very weird when not moving Sign In

I tend to think you have a combination problem with engine and transmission about now. Back to original issues. This needs a good code reading and inspection by a pro witnessing the issues as well. Let him/her suggest the course of action and how much and YOU should always have the last say about any work but would be paying for time spent.

Two (I think) types of transmissions possible for this, one does and one doesn't use a dipstick like most vehicles and I'm not familiar with those at all.

Tell me/us. How much of anything that might be wrong are you able to do anyway? If you are NOT likely to do the work yourself no matter what is wrong the web isn't the right place for you - a real shop is,

Re: Dodge Neon acts very weird when not moving Sign In

I don't know which transmission I have and I don't do the work myself. I will (try) to get it fixed in the next weeks and post back an update in the next few weeks.

Thanks for all the help!
