Cost of replacing rear Diferential? Sign In

Hi.

Can anyone provide me with an estimate of how much I would expect to pay a mechanic to either (a) rebuild//fix or (b) replace the rear differential in an E90 318i SE Saloon. The car was registered in 2006 if that helps.

I'd like to have so estimates to compare with the quote I may expect from a mechanic.
I need to pay a mechanic to resolve this. I know nothing about cars so I don't know how to do it myself. I just wanted to know how much I may expect to pay for a job like this - ball park.

There is a 'clunking' sound coming from this area of the car. The mechanic listened to it and identified it as coming from the rear Dif.

They need to open it up first to see what is happening in there but he's indicated a couple of options depending on what they find.

It may be that they can 'fix' whatever the problem is themselves. Or they may have to replace it.

Thanks

? First you are going to have to know or say what the car is, model year helps and the exact drivetrain for any chance of quotes for costs.

Best I can find it's a BMW which means IMO if you have to ask how much things cost it's the wrong car for you but will move on. The version may not be sold to the USA in whole or part so lost for much more than educated guesses for this.

First verify that it really is a problem with the differential at all as you don't seem so sure nor whoever looked at it! Quite simply need to know if inside the differential or a shaft going into it? Will make a total difference in approach.
If in fact it is a problem inside the differential you may not know the repair until it can be opened and inspected for exactly what the cause is up to a replacement unit new or used? Can't know with this info and bet you end up at a BMW dealer or transmission/drivetrain specialty shop if inside differential,

What a strange reply.

The model is in line 3 of my message. Didn't you read my post? And why should knowing the cost of everything me a prerequisite to owning a car?

Anyway - yes I know they need to open it up to confirm what the problem is. That is obvious.

Which leaves me back where I started.

What a pointless reply.

OK you said it was first registered in 2006 not what model of drivetrain it has or the model year! When it was registered means nothing if you were early in the model year or late all the time.

Still, there's no telling what it's going to cost which is the key question and you had a mechanic on it so what did they say for costs of the whole thing if that's what will be found out?

You also said you aren't going to do this yourself and if the place that did look at it was going to they may have to charge to open it up to give a quote/price to fix it. Seems you want a price with not enough known what is even wrong yet!

Try this: Take it somewhere and ask for a quote to fix it probably a charge to just look that may or may not go towards the repair if you fix it there. That or ask what a whole new one would cost in a worst case scenario. There's no crystal ball from the web on what's making the noise vs being at it in person!
