Clicking in volvo Sign In

Greetings all. 1995 volvo 850 Glt. Two weeks ago I noticed that my engine was making a clicking noise as it ran, and the intensity of the clicking would ramp up as I hit the excelerator. I drove it approx. 70 miles on the highway that night with the clicking. Next day I drove it city driving for a day and that night while on the highway (after 30 highway miles) I noticed my oil light flash on then off. I pulled over and saw oil dripping ferevently out of somewhere on the left rear of the engine block. I filled up 5 quarts just to get home and by the time I got there the light had flashed on again and then off (again) While I parked there was one or two bangs in the engine (probably seizing due to the low oil). I assume that the engine isnt worth pulling and that the car is baked. I put alot of effort into this car to get it running so I am just curious as to what makes a clicking noise in an engine and then causes some oil seal to blow 120 miles later. It's a DOHC inline 5 cylinder 2.4 liter. Thanks for any inormation.SmileSmileSmileSmile (happy anyway!!)

Re: Clicking in volvo Sign In

What happened is you developed a serious oil leak and instead of realizing it and stopping the car immediately as you should have, continuing to drive with low to no oil destroyed the engine. The noises you heard was the engine being destroyed.

The first thing I checked when I heard the noise was the oil level and it was fine.
If the original clicking was caused by low oil, then how come when my oil light came on 120 miles later there still was oil gushing out of the engine?

No, the oil was not fine when the clicking started. It was at least 3 quarts low then. Running it with more than 1 quart low is abusing the engine. More than 2 will kill it real fast.

Comment: Not sure any new engine would go a mile with inadequate oil. It's not a game and they don't call them idiot lights without reason! One blink you are in serious trouble. As Hammer said - don't drive a car if some reason it lacks proper oil,

Re: Clicking in volvo Sign In

The oil came out 120 miles later because of the leak and your engine was destroyed because of the leak. Oil PRESSURE is the key here. You may still have had some oil in it but as it leaked/ was forced out by the oil pressure the engine handgrenaded. MO
