BRAKE NOISE Sign In

1996
Geo Prizm
1.6
187,000
Hello
I'm now have a 1996 Geo Prizm
My problem is when I apply my brakes I hear a squealing
sound, also when turning right or left while driving. In the
last two months I have installed new front brake pads and
new front rotors (both sides) What seems to be the problem?

Re: BRAKE NOISE Sign In

If from your new brakes it could be that brand of pads just has a problem. You may need to go back, make sure calipers are lubed where they should be and pins if used. They also make a goo you can put on the back side of pads to help squealing. If job is new enough you might need a different brand of pads and complain where you bought the others. Ceramic pads about never make peep and if legal for the car and of course cost more but last for ages, make no brake dust and are silent.

There's an outside chance that wear sensors and bent in too close but those usually shut up when applying the brakes.

Can't think of much else right now that could be so annoying. Over the years I've had vehicle that just were noisy and tried everything to shut them up. Changing brand worked the best,

Re: BRAKE NOISE Sign In

My new fav is Centric ceramic. Last forever, feel great, no noise or dust - worth it. If that totally works I'd scream about the old ones if you just did this. If very recent I'll say you can leave the rotors alone but there could be some break in period so use caution at first,

Tom
I will do a price check on the pads that you suggested and will give the new rotors some more wearing time it has
been just a week since they were installed.

Re: BRAKE NOISE Sign In

I checked with auto zone for pricing, I have two choices, 1. do a upgrade or 2.but the same brake pads and have them
greased before installing.

Re: BRAKE NOISE Sign In

I don't know what they meant by greasing brake pads! You do grease where metal parts move but NEVER where the friction is. They may not have "Quiet" pads and package would be marked as such. NAPA is more likely to have quiet pads by even another brand than I mentioned. Just checked Autozone's site and there was quite a selection but none at the site stated "quiet" - the pads probably should come with a metal backing plate but you'd have to look at the counter as it was too hard to see from their site,

Re: BRAKE NOISE Sign In

You have been doing a lot of hunting lionell. Agree that last one sounds good. I'm spoiled as I live right near New England's largest (probably) brake only warehouse outlet that simply has and can do anything,

Re: BRAKE NOISE Sign In

Most of the better pads come with a little packet of special grease. Spread an even coat at all the contact areas of the BACK of the pad. Be careful not to get any on the rotor or contact surface.

Re: BRAKE NOISE Sign In

That is done to quiet noises, not extend life of the pads
