99 grand prix dry start help Sign In

I have a 99 grand prix with 225000 miles. When I start it in th morning
It has a lifter tap for about 3-4 min. I tried Lucas oil with my last oil change and that didn't work. I read here and there that some people are saying it could be the oil filter not stopping the oil from draining to the pan. I would like to kn.ow what you guys think.

Thank you

225K - that's pushing it alone. Not oil filter-- oil drains back passively. What is the sludge situation? If real bad it could be toast or if little to none you could try a quick flush AYOR as that can throw junk in more wrong places.

You may have weak oil pressure that could be checked by gauge where it reads it not the car's.

Also not sure what you are hearing. You could be fooled by some noises??

It probably is a lifter but don't blame the oil filter. I've had some success running a quart of Marvel Mystery oil add to the crankcase with a fresh oil change.

Which engine? If it is the 3.1L, they are known for piston slap when cold which is normal unless it is really excessive.

Yes, it's the 3.1 so it's just the age?

No, not necessarily.........................

I have a van with the 3.4 which is basically the same engine. It was parked for a long period of time and had a nagging lifter noise when put back on the road. It eventually disappeared with the addition of Marvel Mystery oil.

Piston slap may be a possibility but don't assume that is the problem.

I heard somewhere that it could be mistaking for an exhaust leak

Lots of noise can be mistaken for lots of other things to an inexperienced ear and I can't give you that. An experienced tech would immediately know the difference.

I may have said in this thread about exhaust leaks making noise that CAN go away as in a crack in a manifold - sometimes. Of course when you look and listen you find those right away when in front of you.

Piston slap if ordinary is either short skirted pistons or wear that can make a dull thunky type sound (muffled bell kinda) that when warm can go away as well but is a distinct sound,
