99 GMC Jimmy 4x4 loud hum while driving Sign In

1999 GMC Jimmy SLS 4x4 4.3 l vortec

I am having quite some trouble with the truck. I'll start with a brief background for you. I bought this truck just about 4 years ago to the day today (12/18/09) with 65 - 69k on it. Almost immediately, I had replaced the injectors & plenum - 01/05. Here is what I have had done:

rear end replaced - bad axle bearing led to this (open to posi) 02/08
oil cooler lines - 06/05
u joints (both) - 0805
all 4 axles - in 07/08
motor mount (lower)
all 4 ball joints - 08/09
both hub assemblies 2x last time in early 08 and 09 (one was a warrantied part)
water pump - early 05
heater core - spring 09
4x4 switch - 07
shocks (just maintenance)
tires (maintenance)
tune ups (maintenance)
oil changes every 3 months - always

I know my intake is leaking a little, but all my fluids are still safe, and didn't seem to dwindle enough to add until recently. Last weekend, the oil filter lines (maybe even oil cooler lines idk) are leaking - not real bad, but enough to notice wherever I park. I also have a leaky power steering pump. All the lights on my 4x4 electric switch are out, but I am positive that it is in 2H. This summer, my service 4x4 light went on intermittently, and then would go off. So, when the codes were attempted to be pulled, nothing came up - cuz the light goes off/on... Anyways, then the dash panel went out after that.

Last weekend, also, with the noticed oil and power steering fluid leaks, there is a hum that doesn't sound to me like it is from the tires or tire area. It sounds to me as if it is coming from the front of the engine, in the middle. I am still driving it, there doesn't seem to be a shake, but it sure is loud on the freeway. When at an idle, you can't hear a thing wrong with it... only when you are driving. It has almost 119,000 now.

I love this little trouble making truck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cindy

That's a lot of leaks and stuff for a cared for vehicle!

Guess: A humming noise while driving suggest a scalloped tire or wheel bearing or a pulley in the belt system or the belt itself - hard to say. You could try taking the belt off and spin any idlers, tensioner the water pump new or not and they should be near silent.

Spin and check wheel bearing with it hoisted. Since this only does this while moving or it's fooling you got to go thru the list.

It would be very rare for both front bearing to go at once but it's possible and the noises can travel.

If the tires seem ok, run your hand and feel for what I'll call sawtoothing where the leading edge wears more and if worn down watch out for steel coming out or you quickly get a bloody hand!

It may require a shop to hoist and sometimes if a tire issue rotating the tires the noise will change to the new location.

You said you replaced all ball joints! Who's not greasing them? They can last indefinately if greased on time. Lowers are a pill and might be getting passed by! Just some thoughts to consider for now,

T
