98 Ford Taurus Occasional Scraping When Braking/Low Speed Coasting Sign In

Ok, here's what I've got:

Year of vehicle: 1998
Make of vehicle: Ford
Model of vehicle: Taurus
Engine size: 3.0
Mileage: 172,542

Here's the trouble:

When applying the breaks, and as far as I can tell only when slowing at low speeds, I hear a horrid scraping sound coming from the front of the car. If I am going highway speeds and hit the brakes, it doesn't ever happen until I am close to a stop, if it happens at all. I am not a car person at all, but I have tried to figure out exactly what was making the sound without taking the car apart. I have rolled the windows down and listened while it scraped, and I can't hear it outside of the car. I don't know if this is because it's not a brake problem or if it's because the sound is too loud coming through the dash. After I come to a stop while it is scraping, sometimes when I coast again it will make a very soft scraping noise while I am going 5 mph or less but stops when I speed up. It seems to start and stop at random; it might scrape at one light and be fine at the next. The scraping doesn't seem to be an "even" scraping, but rather it seems almost like a "gurgling" scrape, like the sound of tires over gravel as opposed to over cement.

If there is any other information I need to provide, please let me know, and I'll do my best to get it for you. Thank you very much!

OK, have you had your brakes inspected yet?

I haven't yet, but I had them replaced no more than six months ago. Prior to that I went several years without having them replaced and have actually done less driving on them recently than I did before having them changed.

I'm at work. I figured I'd ask for help here before I go pay someone $100 to look at it and make up 6 other problems that I have to sell my soul to afford.

If that's what you get, then you need to find a different shop.

Brake checks are free at most shops.

There is a possibility the brakes were of a lesser quality than what was on it before. If so, the noise can be attributed to the compound in the pads and the metal in the rotors. What skind of shop did the brakes for you? Good luck with it.
