'98 Chevy S10 Knocking/Ticking Sound After Accident Sign In

1998
Chevrolet
S10 Pickup
4.3 L V6
184,000 Miles

The truck was in an accident (jumped a ditch) and the front end needs a lot of work, but in the week or two after the accident the engine itself appeared to be running as well as it had been. However, when we got it back from the body shop we found the starter was bad. We replaced it and it starts now, but there's a loud knocking/ticking sound coming from the engine. The noise gets worse when you accelerate. There is no check engine light.

We took it to a mechanic and they put it on a lift and took a look and told us it was an oil bearing and basically not worth fixing considering the age and condition of the truck. However, we had a second mechanic listen to the noise and they said it could be the flywheel. He also said it's possible it's something to do with a knock sensor.

Prior to the accident the truck was running fine. We hadn't had any real trouble with the engine or oil leaks or oil pressure or anything of the sort. The oil pressure is still good, which is one reason why I'm doubting it's a bearing problem. Even immediately after the accident there was no noise and the engine seemed to run fine. It wasn't until it came back from the body shop that it started to act up.

I'm not very good with auto repair so I figured I'd ask here. We've got someone coming by tomorrow to check the computer codes to see about the knock sensor.

I'm afraid not. Knock sensors don't make noise.

I thought that sounded a bit odd. I'm pretty sure it's either the flywheel or a bearing problem. I'm just trying to get some opinions given the circumstances. The oil pressure also has me questioning the bearing diagnosis.

Double check your starter installation.....maybe something is hitting the flywheel.......I would help to be able to hear the noise...

I agree with sidom , check the starter. I would remove it confirm p/n. loook for any damage to it or flywheel make sure the starter drive gear works smoothly. Make sure it's wired correctly.
