97 hombre clunks while in gear

hi i have a 97 hombre with a 5spd transmission. 2.2 liter 4 cylinder engine. 2 wheel dr with 124,000 miles on it. i have been noticing that while driving at low engine speed the car will make a clunk, which sounds like its coming from the transmission. both when i engage and disengage the clutch, and while driving in gear, and depressing and releasing the pedal. it seems to go away in 3rd or 4th gear at higher rpms. i have also noticed that while braking in nuetral, the clunk will turn into a rattle while coming to a stop. i looked for busted mounts, bout all i found was my sway bar links were broken, which i replaced. but i did notice alot of free play in the drive shaft, which seems to recreate the noise when i twist it by hand.

Going off what you've posted you may want to take a close look at your u joints, make sure the play isn't coming from there............
