I'm not sure of the engine size and it has 156,000 miles on it.

The back brakes first started making a loud squealing noise about a year ago, that would come and go. I took the car to the shop and told me that the only thing they could do that wouldn't be completely expensive was to GLAZE them. Afterwards, the noise stopped for a month and began again, went back and had the same thing done. It's been about half a year now since I've taken the car in and the squealed is still there but now there is a new problem. The front left wheel just recently began making a loud grinding noise whenever I break, and sometimes even causes me to stop abruptly, almost as if it locks. It worried me, but today the worry went up to a whole new level when I started backing out of my driveway and it made the grinding noise, sounded like it got stuck, and made another weird noise. I continued driving for a little while and I heard as if something had completely come off the car and fell onto the road. I got off and checked the street but saw nothing. Also, right afterwards whenever I break I have to push almost all the way to the floor just to make a decent stop.

I'm sure I should have gotten the breaks fixed long ago, but now I'm out of money and options. I need to know if this is a lost cause or if anyone knows an estimate on how much the repair would be, and if I should even continue driving it at all because I rely on this car for everything. I would really appreciate some answers. Thanks.

If you continue to drive that car and ignore the brake problems, you're going to end up killing someone. If you can't afford to fix it, then park it and get a bicycle.
