Just got a free estimate. Midas said the lower rod bearing broke. Does this motor have a two piece crank where I can fix it from underneath or is it a one piece where the motor has to come out

There is no such thing as a 2 piece crankshaft. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I meant two piece main bearing. If it is, can I fix it from underneath?

All crank rod and main bearings are 2 piece. The question is whether the crank got scored which will pretty much mean the engine is wasted.

It has been driven and used in it's present condition. Is it saveable?

How would i know that? It really depends on whether any of the bearings have spun in the rod cap or not. An experienced tech could probably tell you by listening to it but until you drop the pan and inspect the crankshaft, you aren't going to know for sure. My advice is start looking for a new engine. Those bearings may not be the only damage.

Thank you Hammertime! I have the time to do that. Either way we're talking cash. I'm gonna open it up tomorrow and see what I find. Thanx to everyone with their input! In the immortal words of Bill Pullman in "TWISTER", ... "I'm GOIN' IN"!

Reality is that your chances of saving that engine by slipping in a set of rod bearings is slim to none. You really need to know what you're doing to even inspect it properly. You have to remove all the rod caps to inspect the crank and you can't mix the position of any of them up. You also need to know what you're looking for which i doubt you do. Do yourself a favor and start looking for a good used motor. You're going to be just throwing money away trying to fix that one. If the crank or cylinder walls are scored, even a little bit, it's all over for that motor.

This isn't a Mack truck. You can't in-frame overhaul it. With the crank in the block and inframe you can't even get the micrometer in the right spot to measure your journals which likely need to be reground anyhow. As HT said, look for another motor. Duct tape isn't going to patch this thing up and I guarantee if you try a bearing swap in chassis it won't last a week before you think gnomes with jackhammers are paving a road under the hood.

You guys are awesome! Brand new motor from Autozone is $1950. Found a rebuilt one for $600. Like you said, I'm not a real mechanic, but I think $600 ain't bad. Thanx HT and NW. I believe in the power of the internet now!

Have that used one checked out very carefully before buying it. It would be nice if you could hear it run but that's not always possible.
