Recently my brothers 95 corolla has started screeching when turning the wheel. It has become worse since the weather has gotten colder. The power steering pump has plenty of fluid but the belt has never been replaced but it doesn't look worn at all. This makes me think that it has incorrect tension or it rubbing on the walls of the pulley, but then again I'm no expert. But I don't want to go removing belts if that isn't the most likely cause. Looking for someone with more experience to explain what my next move should be.

Also, my local mechanic has suggested that since the car has over 150k miles and has never had the timing belt changed, that we should replace the timing belt and the water pump. And by doing this they would also put a new belt on the power steering/water pump. Is this something that I should consider? He offered to do this for $300, which seems high to me but I know labor is 90% of the price.

Does anyone think that I should just have to mechanic replace the whole thing to avoid possible problems later, or just replace the belt myself and hope for the best?

You should do what your mechanic suggests. You don't want to snap a belt which will be a lot more than $300 to repair. I'm really surprised the belt hasn't let loose already with the age and mileage you have on that car.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks for the input. Guess I'll just have to bring it to him and bite the bullet. Better than killing something else with a jacked up timing belt.

Thanks again.

You have to be kidding. $300 is high? That's probably $800 parts and labor on the retail market

Like I mentioned, I'm not an expert. When something breaks on the car if I can't fix it with a few google searches then it's going to the shop. I don't have the slightest idea what the new parts are going for nowadays, just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting screwed even though the mechanic has helped me out in the past. I also think the reason the price is so low is that it is a new shop and he is trying to rack up some return customers. He told me the first time I had him replace the timing belt on my car that if another shop quotes a cheaper price, he will beat it no questions asked.

Anyways, looks like I'll be taking it to him and he says he can get on it first thing tomorrow morning.

Ditto - this is way too late by both age and miles and many would be on third of each! Don't pinch pennies as that's already a great price - to add if a tad more get the best quality you can - too important,

I would have to assume the $300 is labor only.......and it's still low for all the work mentioned............lmao

Bit of follow up on the repair. Dropped it off at 8 AM and picked it up at 6 PM. They replaced the timing belt, alternator belt, water pump, power steering/water pump belt, a gasket that was jacked up, and did an oil change.

Total charge was $405.77

Car is running wonderful now, thanks again for the advice.

Thanks for the report of the fix. Man - IMO that's a deal for all that!
