'94 Chevy P/U making weird engine (?) noise. Sign In

Chevy Silverado, 1994 4X4, 6 liter (to the best of my memory, I'm at work, the truck is at home..sorry!), it's got over 100 k. On October 22, I started hearing a strange noise from the engine compartment. Like a fluttery, slightly ticking noise, seems to be on the driver's side (but my hearing isn't what it used to be so that may or may not be the case). Kind of reminds me of the way a loose lifter might sound on an old 1970s engine, only not as bad and "tackety tack". It's more of a lighter fluttery sound. It actually almost reminds me of the way a card in a bicycle wheel would sound.

It also seems to be way more noticeable after the engine has heated up and when I'm driving on the highway at a higher speed (and the tempo of the noise speeds up when the engine does), and not so much when I first start it. I do plan on having a mechanic looking at it, but I'd like to have half a clue so I don't get the "oh you're a girl". I just moved out of my home state and am without my former (very trustworthy) mechanic.

The truck doesn't seem to be running worse, but it is an old gal so the normal old age problems do occur (dogginess on occasion when accelerating and that sort of thing), and it only just started happening.

Thanks in advance!

Asking someone to diagnose a noise over the Internet without hearing it is about impossible.

Well, I wasn't really looking for a diagnosis, just some ballpark potential causes. :)

That's still impossible. We don't know if it's engine internal, engine external, transmission, suspension, A/C, drive train. Maybe you can record the noise and post it on u-tube or something.

I find it a little odd, that in a forum called Engine and Car Noises, where a multitude of other posts on car noises have at least garnered attempts on what their car noises could be (and all with mere descriptions of the noise), that my noise is suddenly "impossible". I'm quite flummoxed at why my case is different from all of the other posts here.

Give it a break buddy. No matter how close I get to my keyboard, I can't tell where your noise is coming from and obviously you can't either.

You could post a video up of the noise and then send us the link. If we hear what your hearing, that may or not give us a clue. Plus we will get to see which engine your meaning because they didn't make a 6.0L back then.

I already suggested that. All I got was attitude.
