My 2006 Jeep Commander is making a loud knock. Ran it for about 3 days with little to no oil. We've changed the oil. Flushed out the engine. The old oil looked like metallic paint...not good. The knocking is very bad and I think it might be a rod bearing but I don't know much about engines. Please help!!
Here's a video of it. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w6vpAGVDrjQ&list=WLJ1-qV8OrfELVZdlSDexwrw

Your motor is toast and it's time to look for a new one. This time keep it full of oil.

Honestly, after removing and dismantling the engine, machining the damaged crank, replacing the damaged rod, and cleaning the entire engine out from all the metal that was circulating in it, it just isn't worth it.

It is also possible there could be damage to other bearings and sliding surfaces in the engine from the lack of oil problem you had.

If it was some rare engine, rebuilding would be the right choice. Since they are plentiful, it just isn't worth repairing in my opinion.

It would be better for you to source a good used low mileage salvage yard engine that was in a vehicle the same year that was wrecked. Make sure the salvage yard has some type of warranty on their engines.

If you have your mechanic do the job, let them source an engine for you, so the labor is covered under their warranty also. Our shop has had pretty good luck with salvage yard engines.

I figured it would need a new engine anyways... :( Oh well. Thank you for your time and advice.
