2010 Toyota Camry SE, 4 cylinder automatic, 160,000 miles, started making this loud tapping noise that sounds metallic, no performance issues. Doesn't start until the engine has been running for a few minutes. One mechanic said it sounded like it could be coming from the exhaust front heat shield area and to take it to an exhaust place. Any ideas??? I have a video but couldn't figure out how to post.

! A mechanic didn't know if it was or wasn't a heat shield? Even this new they are common and easy to find. Cold - just tap on them and look for rust around spot welds.

If so the repair is determined by the condition of what's left of them up to whole new parts they cover.
Could be serious or just need a spot weld, rivet added or some repair or a wild engine problem.

A bit disappointed someone called a mechanic had this in person leaving this up to you to figure out and if mechanical engine problems even possible warn you about using it at all or better than what you were told.

Warning if a heat shield only. Some even "muffler shops" are not going to fix heat shields - some other places will not either? Confuses me as many can be good as OE again for cheap and whole parts out of control expensive so watch out for that,

Well, let me clarify not the heat shield underneath, in front of the engine there's a shield in front of the I believe engine intake manifold? I am not very car savvy. I have read that it is common for Toyota to have a baffle come loose from the engine intake manifold and cause a noise. The mechanic listened with the stethoscope and said it sounded to be coming from that area and suggested to take it to an exhaust place. I just am not sure because I don't feel the noise is coming from that area although I could be wrong. He did say that he felt like it was perfectly fine to continue driving the vehicle. I ran some Seafoam into the oil crankcase and it made no impact on the noise.

Do this no skills involved: Engine cold even just tap on the shields front to back with some wood or better a rubber hammer. They'll make noise, engine off even.

They are cheap pie plate metal spot welds give out fast as this or faster where I am forever fixing them before they fall off and they don't sell just shield you buy the whole pipe, muffler, converter if things are lost. YOU NEED THOSE!

if NOT handy and careful ask what could work from a mechanic. Assorted ways - drill a 1/8th hole and rivet it lasts. A hole and small lag screw. Some wrapping with stainless steel worm clamps for clothes dryers will put it back in place and hold tight for ages more looks like a hack but if solid and in place works.
They are VERY common to do this,

Tom
