2005 Ford Focus (70k miles) Rear End Noise Sign In

A couple of months ago, we had all four tires replaced. As soon as I drove the car out of the shop, I noticed what sounded like a loud rubbing sound that increased in volume as I increased in speed. I thought perhaps the tires were rubbing, but after parking the car and inspecting the space between the tire and the wheel well (I think that is the term), it seemed to have plenty of space.

Soon after, I started noticing a very loud vibrating sound (kind of sounds like two, thin peices of metal vibrating against each other) from the rear end of the car, at exactly 30 mph and 45 mph. As soon as I go a couple of mph higher or lower, the sound goes away. It is EXACTLY the same speed when the sound happens.

Recently, the loud rubbing sound has increased significantly. As we drive quicker, the sound increases, although I do notice that the sound mellows slightly at about 55 mph, but increases when I go faster or slower than 55 mph. If I make a sharp left, the rubbing sound goes away completely, but not when I make a sharp right. The steering wheel and car itself is not noticable vibrating and the car does not seem to be pulling in any one direction.

So, my question is about BOTH sounds...the vibrating sound in the rear end (I THINK it is coming from the passenger side) at 30 and 45 mph; and the loud tire noise (almost like it is rubbing) that increases as I excelerate, but goes away completely if I make a sharp left.

Please help! The sound is driving us CRAZY! You cannot hear the person next to you talking unless they used a very loud voice...that is how loud the noise is.

Thank you anyone for your advice!!

I don't know why you are writing to us instead of immediately driving it back to the place that put the tires on so they can check it. We can't hear sounds from here.

Yes, I should have done just thought, but at first I just thought I bought cheap tires and the rubbing sound was just really loud tire tread...or something. I am sure you can tell I am no car expert. Anyway, the shop that did it is a really great friend with my dad, and I felt really bad acussing them of anything. At this point, it has been a couple of months, and it is getting worse. I do have an appointment with them tomorrow to show them what I am talking about, but before I take the car in, I was wondering if any experts out there have heard of similar problems. I realize you cannot hear the sounds. But, I was looking for suggestions. I thought perhaps it was the wheel bearings had failed, but the research I have done online states that the sound occurs when turning, but it is just the opposite with our car...the sound goes away with sharp turns.

As HT said - take it back. If allowing this for a few months you may have ruined one or more tires by waiting or who knows on a web site?

Don't be ashamed to take it back. It's better to have them check it out than to have the wheel fly off the car while your going down the highway.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
