2004 Sedona making engine popping noise Sign In

I have a 2004 Kia Sedona w/120,000 miles on it.

I was driving my car when I smelt something burning and no sounds. When I made it home there was no oil left in the engine. I placed the recommended amount of oil back in and now there's a loud popping sound coming from the engine. Nothing seems to make the sound go away. I've reved the engine, etc. I have not taken it out to drive as I'm afraid it's going to die on the side of the road. Did I kill my car?

Any ideas, tips are appreciated.

Take your other car and head to the dealer for a new car. Don't drive that one unless you have a tow truck following you. One expensive lesson learned............... CHECK YOUR OIL!

How many quarts did it take to fill it up? Some standard dipsticks will read nothing before they are really dangerously low but lower than what the low mark is isn't a good thing no matter what.

At the miles and can't make the connection of a popping sound (a back fire?) and low or no oil. If oil was low enough you should have had warnings from gauge on dash.

At 120K, and think this uses a rubber timing belt when was the last one done? If that jumped it's trouble. You still need to find out why it lost oil and the odor was likely oil dripping on hot exhaust parts. Some things that can leak oil fast include a failed oil pressure switch, problem with oil filter or who knows for sure until you find the source?

Make a habit of checking oil routinely especially when you get up there in miles and don't rely on now many vehicles that will light up a "check oil" light not just the icon or if gauge (probably) of an oil can usually. About universal that red warnings mean NOW not when convenient,
