Ok, I have a 2004 Chevy S-10 extended cab 4x4 truck. I let a friend borrow it (i know, i know) during a snow for its 4x4. He returned it, and there is a clear clunking noise that periodically happens while driving. Best I can tell - I don't drive it very often - is that it only happens in 4x4 mode. He thinks that he might have tried to engage 4x4 from 2x4 while driving, which could be the problem. He also claims he didnt notice the noise until he rather 'gently' nudged a curb, but that seems like it wouldn't result in this. Any thoughts? Many thanks!

As long as the rear wheels aren't being spun out hard, switching to 4x4 on the fly is what this system was made to do and does no harm. Might have a bent rim from a curb check. Might have some front end parts going too, like a ball joint. This is amplified while operating in 4x4. Jack up the front end and have a look to rule out anything severe and save some cash in the long run

Quote "only does it in 4X4"

Don't know that exact system of 4WD for this but many were not designed to use 4WD on just wet or especially dry road surface and would object if used especially noted turning corners or parking and turning at extremes on non slippery surfaces. What type of 4X4 does this one use? AWD = all wheel drive which is usually constantly in wait. Ones you select aren't for non slippery on road use.

As nick said - check what really happened with the curb deal!
