I have a 2003 Santa Fe. Had it towed into dealership and he said that there was a problem with the power steering pulley. He said that it was twisted. How could that happen? Has anyone else come across this same problem?

I'm having a hard time picturing this one. I'm not sure what you mean by "twisted". If you could post a pic that would be a huge help

Sidom,
I had the car towed to dealership and I wasn't able to take pictures. I talked to the service manager and he said that it was a problem with the power steering mechanism. He said that one of the solder points had a bad weld. My 5year 60,000 mile warranty had run out so I have to replace the power steering assembly at my cost. Sucks for me.

Just poking in:

What assembly? The PS pump is separate from the pulley - best I could find is it would be a dealer part. If there's more wrong (lots more stuff than just a pump) then it should be itemized.

If you are off warranty you can now go wherever you feel like for this - that if you can even move the car without yet another tow,

Ok..... That's a little clearer...... Sounds like something you don't see a whole lot of....... That's too bad on the warranty... I though Hyundai's had a little better warranty for orginal owners....

Sidom:

Actually I find their warranty, at least once 10 year, 100,000 mile deal was sneaky! They mandated in some states that work be done ONLY at a dealer at outrageous rates (one example was trans oil change, regular oil change and a few checks for $1,300.00 or warranty would be voided! Hmmm?

Another was (state mandate here is that you can go anywhere) I had to use parts from Hyundai only! Same freaking parts just boxed with their logo on them. Was ticked.

Not bashing the cars but the warranty is/was sneaky,

T

I hadn't heard that Tom...but it doesn't surprise me........ 10/100 is a huge warranty so I'm sure there is all kind of loop holes.....being an original owner is one...... The regular services at the dealer only is b/s. Sad thing is a lot of people don't worry about getting their regular services done on time or keep records so their warranties will be approved. They get upset when they get a powertrain warranty issue denied due to lack of service... I will say again, I thinking limiting the customer to the dealer only for those services is bull and there is probably a lot of people out there that do keep up on their services thinking they've met the warranty requirements that are getting denied. Well that's gonna be Hyundai's image problem they will have to work out..........

I'll tell you about my nightmare with my Cobalt..... Took it in and told them the problem (low compression in #3). It took them 3 days to call me back with the bad news...the problem causing my intermittent random misfire with low compression in #3 Shocked...and the worse news was since I had it 20k & they could only find 1 receipt in the glove box for an oil change it wouldn't be covered due to customer abuse...At that point I was so thankful I am so lazy I don't change my own oil. I had a SA print out all 4 of my LOF receipts and faxed them to the dealer and got my Cobalt warrantied.

What I left out was all the phones calls to me, 1st nothing was wrong with it, then this was wrong or that was wrong. seriously there was about 5 or 6 calls within those 3 days....Now I can laugh about it, then by the 4th call I was ready to go over there & strangle someone..........

Glad you won on that one even if a PITA.

Back in the stone age I worked for a Ford dealer but could have been any. Warranty work was done at Ford's prices which was about 1/2 of the usually rate so the newest or lower paid techs got that work. Dealer and flat rate techs didn't want this stuff at all but it is part of being a dealer.

The proof of services done is critical here (MA) but as said you don't have to go to a dealer for maintenance work as the outrage in this state was enough to regulate that. It also means the non dealer work could take a hit. I specifically look for the label on things like plain oil filters/oil "Meets or Exceeds New Car Requirements" so I could pass on the blame if something happened and gladly never did.

It's not just cars. I find this with about any warranty. They don't want to hear it or do it but love to brag about the coverage before you buy something!

In fairness - there is some genuine abuse out there but no where near what what manufacturers will claim - IMO,

T
