2002 Escape Grinding Noise on Start Sign In

Hi!

I am having a problem with my 2002 ford escape, xls, 4wd, around 140,000 miles.

When I start the car it makes a loud grinding noise. If I let the car sit a few minutes, it goes away. Alternatively, if I start driving right away, once I get to around 25 mph it goes away. the grinding noise does not return when I stop (like at red lights, stop sign, etc).

Any help appreciated :)

Noises by nature are difficult to describe. Try to find the source location. So far it kind of seems like starter drive isn't retracting away from flywheel enough instantly but can't be sure.

If you can try to take a video of it (with sound of course) while it's doing it may help us,

T

Thanks for you response. I will try to take a video. The noise is coming from the front of the car, somewhere under the hood

You need to target it closer than that for even a wild guess,
