2001 olds intrigue 3.5L V6 144,500miles.

Hi there. My car began to make a noise I can't describe anyother way then the sound of a card in the spokes of a bike. I removed the front passenger tire to examine it for any reason it could be leaking air. When i got it off i thought it would be a good idea to check the brake pads. when i attempted to remove the caliper to get to the pad, but i couldn't get it off I can't remember if someone used an impact wrench to tighten on the bolts but they were to hard for me to get off. so I put the tire back started the car and the noise started. the sound is coming from the area of the car. the noise was not there before. it got worse when i began to back the car out of the garage. turning the wheel it got louder. I have no idea what happened or why it was so sudden. could i have bumped something? is something to tight?

A few things come to mind..........

1. A bad CV joint will usually crackle and worse when turning with power applied. At first they usually don't make much noise going straight ahead.

2. Wheel bearing. At first not heard in a driveway unless wildly bad and they too usually are worse turning one way and better turning the other way while going along.

3. Splash shied could be rubbing brake rotor! If so you can usually bend or persuade them away from doing that.

4. A totally trashed tire?

Note overuse of word "usually."

Questions: Can it do this sitting still. Is it faster with speed of vehicle or RPMs of engine?

Caliper tight: It should be tight and you should be able to remove just caliper without air tools by just slide pin bolts. Many have a bracket that will stop you from removing rotor and those bolts are larger and require more force as those are even tighter and meant to be.

You should be able to get a basic look at brake(s) without taking them off - and the condition of the rotor.

Hope that helped,

T
