2001 Corolla Engine Rattling *With Belt Off* Sign In

I've got a 2001 Corolla with an engine rattling sound that's been going on for about a month now. It's gotten slightly worse so I figured I should probably take a look at it. I slipped the belt off and noticed a definite bad pulley, but the rattling still continued with the belt off anyway. Any and all help is greatly appreciated, as I just graduated college and my finances aren't exactly aligned to spend a ton of money at a garage.

The rattling occurs mostly when the car is idling, and sometimes randomly while I'm driving, usually at lower speeds / RPM's.

I'm also pretty capable at doing most repairs myself, just need to diagnose it first

Attached is a video of the engine rattling.

Thanks in advance!

Can't connect to your video.

How many miles on this engine?

It depends on which end of the engine that noise is coming out of.

If it's the front of the engine, it sounds like a timing chain.

If it's the transmission end, it could be a cracked flywheel.

But I'm leaning toward the timing chain.

As best as I can tell it's coming from the area of the timing chain. Still runs without issue, just has the rattling noise mostly when idling or some random times when driving (usually lower RPM's). Probably should have clarified that in the first post.

Would the timing chain be worth replacing if that's the case considering the age and mileage?

You definitely don't want to keep driving it that way. If it jumps the engine is junk.

Are you sure about the engine mileage. That's not many miles to be having timing chain problems.

Unless the mechanic lied to me, it had an engine replacement shortly before I bought it and the "newer" engine only had 100k on it.

Also, car has no codes minus the emission one. Not sure if timing chain would throw a code or not?

Is there any way to determine if it's the timing chain without pulling the engine apart?

No, it would not.

I can't really listen to the vid right now, but are there any codes being set?
If this is throwing a P0340 & P0016 or any sync codes, then you more than likely are looking at a chain issue
