2001 Chevy Silverado power steering noise & shuttering Sign In

I have a 01 Chevy Silverado 5.3L ext cab 4wd with about 80k miles. I had to make a few very sharp turns in a small parking lot after which now when I make any turns it shutters and makes kind of a clicking noise. If you turn the steering wheel in park you can actually feel a thumping in the power steering hose along with the noise. I had to turn the wheels the full range is it possible maybe a valve of some kind is stuck and if so would it be in the pump or the steering box itself. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone might have. Thanks, Doug.

First you need to know front end (steering) parts are all good. I suggest changing the PS fluid and add just one oz of Trans-X which can dissolve any varnish gum causing issues. Don't overdo crap in a bottle - most is garbage and wants to sell their product with wild claims and can make matters worse,

Hi Tom, I'll give it a try, what's the most effective way to drain the fluid ? I don't suppose it would be as easy as finding a drain plug and is Trans-X readily available at any parts store. Thanks, Doug.

There are fancy ways and equipment. I just use a silly turkey baster well marked for oils only or can use a suction gun. My own newest vehicle is a 97 C/K (just 51K on it) and steering went funny with everything right? Did the trick I just suggested and solved for years now!

Why? Not real sure but don't argue with what works. Again - additives and tricks out of a bottle/can are mostly junk. Trans-X does and can work in the maze of junk out there IF this is the trouble. Can't say and using little really shouldn't hurt and if does work may take a day or two. Plain ATF which is usually PS fluid too alone is full of strong additives but newer vehicles get hotter and oils can become sticky. Just a guess on this as I'm not there and don't want you to make it worse,

PS: My newest car is 23 years old and like new still! Had a PS gearbox slow drip and Trans-X solved it for ages now vs pretty much a whole new gear box! 89 Town Car and common problem...........

Total P/S failure, oh well it was worth a try. People I talk to are saying most likely the pump rather than a steering box just wondering what you thought and also do you think it would do any harm driving it another week until I can get it fixed ? I appreciate your advice. Thanks, Doug.

Shoot: Worth the try and sorry it didn't work and again NO magic in bottle can be. Forgive me/we regulars as we are dealing with a web site and not there in person and do our best for your best interest.

Good luck with the proper fix best known by someone in person,

T
