2000 sonata subframe & axle question Sign In

Hi, I am in Canada and purchased a 2000 Hyundai Sonata in mid-2010. ( now has 120000 km..4 cyl ~2.0L?~ )

I now need some work done on the front so took it to the shop and got a quote. The shop is going to replace the sub frame as part of a recall on this model. It is rusted out and will be replaced free of charge to me…GREAT! However, they also want to do something else that will cost me $800-900. Here’s what the quote says:

J#1
correction: subframe replacement or waxing
Parts:
-Crossmemb
-Kit-bolt

J# 2
Correction: replace LF outer cv boot and wheel bearing LF
Parts:
-breaing-fr
-ring-snap

J# 3
Correction: replace RF axle
Parts:
-RF axle
-outer boot

Total labor for J# 2+3 … 5.20 hours
Total Parts for J# 2+3 … $287.00
Plus taxes

My question is regarding the labor costs.
It appears they are going to do the work on the subframe, put everything back together again and THEN start J# 2+3 as if the car just came in off the street.
Is this the proper procedure for this?
Or could they save time by combining all the jobs into one?

Thanks! I appreciate your time.
Brent

Brent: Ages ago worked for a new car dealer and warranty or recall work was done at the price the manufacturer listed which was about half of what shop would have charged if not so or don't be a dealer. If you could find some real other work needed and customer agreed - fine.

If it really needs other work to be safe then perhaps have them show you. One thing doesn't add up here. That outer boot on CV shaft comes with a replacement so I don't get that one?

I suggest second opinion and do keep the car safe. Do what is needed to be safe as an accident is far more costly in life or damage but try to know you really need this repair as best you can,

Actually on this job you really aren't saving that much time dropping the sub frame. To do both axles & one bearing the only real crossover time from the sub frame being out would be having the lower ball joints loose, everything else that would need to be unbolted would still be intact, but there would be a little combination time there....

My only question would be the labor on the bearing. If they were doing the frame & axles at the same time then the left knuckle would basically be sitting on the ground & just need the bearing pressed, there would be no R&R for that particular job.........
