Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I know very little about cars Our 2000 Taurus will not start suddenly for some reason. When trying to turn it over, it will slowly crank but never catch. Eventually all we will get is a constant clicking and it will not even try to turn. Weird thing is the needles on the dash gauges. They will all make a clicking sound and bounce up and down in the resting position for about 5-10 seconds after we turn the key to start. All of the lights come on and do not seem dim or anything. Could this still be a bettery problem? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a low battery. Did you try jump starting the car yet? -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

Have not had a chance to yet. Our pair was frayed and couldn't find anyone close that had any. Kinda thought it might be the battery, just wanted another opinion. Will Give that a shot and post back if there is still problems. Thanks for the quick reply!

Ok, just went out and got some new jumper cables, no dice. Still will not start Now it will try to turn over once or twice, then I can hear a continuous clicking coming from the engine until I let go of the key (which I do when it starts the noise). Doesn't look like I have much of a choice other than to get it towed to a shop at this point.....

You could also take the battery out and have it tested. Sounds like you have a bad battery or a poor connection at the battery. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Yeah, that sounds like a plan, and cheaper than towing if it solves the issue lol I'll have to yank it out and get it tested tomorrow. Hopefully that will be the issue. Honestly do not remember when the battery was last replaced either.... I'll follow up tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it!

Just some notes: Rapid fire clicking suggests low amps for whatever reason reaching the starter at it's solenoid to protect starter. Batteries: Many are marked as to their age. Ex: B-1 should mean it was made in February, 2011. Others are encrypted but still can find the date it was made. If over 4 years old just dump it and charge the new one off car first as most are not fully charged when new! When they (if that has happened) go dead it reduces life or kills them new or not and if below freezing by a bit will definitely self destruct new or not! Jumper cables and jumper boxes: Quality varies wildly. Look for gauge of either and look for real fine stranded copper or they are useless for a fast jump. Either can still have poor connection to be fussed with for good contact. Good jumper can start a huge V8 w/o a battery in the ailing vehicle at all but you'll part with a couple hundred for that strength/quality. One more: If a jump works on just a low battery from another vehicle there's risk involved. Both alternators depending on state of the low or dead battery can damage alternators of either and more! T

Well, it was the battery after all. Sorry about the dumb question :-) Used to batteries being completely dead with no power to even crank the engine. When I pulled out the old battery, saw a stickers that said June 07, ouch. Lol Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions and have a great Thanksgiving everyone!
