2000 Ford Taurus with 73,000 mi on it recently started making a scraping noise from front right passenger side. The noise began less than one week ago after about 15-20 minutes/10 miles of driving part city/part highway. Took the car in for another problem the following day (idler pully and tensioner replaced, oil change done), and the noise went away. Drove the car 100 miles on the highway the following day, it sat for 2 days, then drove it 100 miles back with no noise except at the very end of the second half of the trip. This morning, drove the car 7 miles, part highway, part city driving, and noise is noticably worse at the end of this small trip. The noise appears to happen when going over potholes or uneven ground and got worse/louder the longer the trip. Sounds as if something is scraping on something else? I checked the wheels visually and nothing seems to be interfering with them. It doesn't seem to have a specific rhythm to it (i.e. it happens after one complete rotation of the wheel) but rather seems to be kind of random. Please help!

Start with jacking up the car and pulling the tire. Check the pads carefully to make sure they are not worn down to the backing. If the brakes appear ok, put the tire back on and rock it side to side to feel for any play in the axle bearing or any play in the steering. Rock the tire up and down and feel for any play in the lower ball joint.
Also, check the sway bar links to make sure they are tight and the rubber bushings are not ripped. If everything is ok then lower the car and jounce the bumper and listen for the noise by the strut. Many times the upper strut mounts dry out and start to bind causing creaks and other noises. If you can't find the problem, I suggest at this point to let a mechanic road test it.

Steve
