2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe
125,000 miles

This car makes a loud grinding noise at the front passenger side. The noise occurs only when I accclerate, car moving (forward/not while in reverse). The noise does NOT occur if I accelerate / idoling/ car NOT mobile. The performance of the car (seemingly) has not been effected (No shaking/no vibrating). The noise occurs while accelerating upto approx 25 miles per hours, at that point it will stop and it cruises! It seems the only situation in which I do not hear this noise is when I turn-up-the music.

Please advise.

Also, I reside in the the southeast/So. Florida and will be relocating to the north (midwest). What is your advise in moving a car from the oven to the freezer??

Noise could be several things so check out all. One that could make noise and go away could be worn brake parts (any) evidenced by one side worn more than the other as some clue.

To acclimate the car just have antifreeze checked or changed if older to the standard 50/50 mix. Basic and routine maintenance up to date, good tires for any place and carry a couple items like an ice scraper, small broom and freeze proof windshield washer solvent - have that with you at all times in cold climates. You might be using plain water which isn't a good idea for anywhere for those. Good luck and the readier you are the better,

Get your car undercoated. We get our cars new up here that way and I've seen southern ones not have it as its sold as a rustproofing package due to road salt in winter. A few years of salt exposure eats up anything not protected from it. Even then your car up here would already have rust showing and need new brake lines if it was sold new.

Definately get your coolant checked as Tom suggested, battery must test good as a marginal one will start in 75 degrees but fail at 0 degrees.

You're going to have to learn how to drive all over again. Never trust you have traction in the winter. See a lot of southern cars in the ditch just from an inch of snow. Never use your cruise control on icy or snowy roads. Tires must be good. Go slow until you get the feel of winter driving, no sense in being in a hurry to get to the scene of the crash.
