2000 Audi A4 B5 1.8T Quattro with knocking noise Sign In

I have an Audi A4 that makes a rhythmic thumping/knocking noise. It appeared about a day ago suddenly when I left a parking lot after just being stopped for a few min.

The noise usually appears aprox. 10 min into a ride but sometimes immediately. It can sometimes just disappear mid drive and come back a few minutes later. The knocking is relevant to the speed or the RPM of the car (I haven't been able to come to a conclusion on that one) and will be faster at higher speed/RPM. The knocking disappears completely when the engine is under throttle but as soon as I let go of the throttle it reappears.

The knocking seems to be coming from around the dashboard/center console but I have had a friend say it seemed to be coming from the side of the car (don't remember which side).

I changed the oil and filter today. Oil temps are usually around 70-80°C/158-176°F and coolant is usually around 90°C/194°F. The timing belt was changed about 15000km/9000miles ago.

Thanks in advance!

? You aren't sure if speed or RPM but "throttle" makes it go away? Well try just RPM a little sitting still and again in neutral when it does it if that makes it go away.
Noises aren't good if confused have a tech listen to this NOW up to maybe not drive this till more is known there just isn't enough to go on for me,

If I have it in neutral or the clutch down the sound isn't there, it's only when the car is actually rolling. I have ordered an appointment at a mechanic in a few days

Great. Seem like a load on engine matters is a good clue to find it. There's lots going on with a car pay attention to noises and do something right away. It's not handy but if like this one could save the thing by not just driving on and on with some problem unknown and end up without a car at all. It's too old already to have a catastrophic failure and be worth it over what could be something as dumb as a loose wheel (wild danger) or who knows with this yet?

Good luck,

T
