1998 pontiac sunfire Loud " thumping " noise when pressing brakes Sign In

I have a 98 pontiac sunfire. I replaced the front rotors/brake pads about 5 months ago because Everytime I would hit the brakes to slow down, i would get a loud thump sound and a " shaking" in the car while stopping. Once i got the rotors/pads off, they were bad, so i replaced them. The thumping / shaking stopped and I had smooth stopping.

It ran smooth for about 3 months. But now the thumping is back everytime I slow down. I had someone check out the front pads/rotors again, their all fine, still new. We also looked at the BACK drums/pads. They are also fine.

No one seems to know what else could be causing this thumping and shaking that occurs while I'm stopping.

appreciate any advice/help!

Thanks!

When the thumping occurs, do you feel any pulsating in the brake peddle when stopping? That would indicate the new rotors are our of parallelism and quite possibly need turned to make them true.

THanks for the response Chickenhouse! Yeah i can feel a little bumping in the pedal. Could they become " out of parallelism" over time? Because they ran smooth for a few months after being new, then the thumping started.

Also, can the drums in the back also be out of parallelism? I don't know much about fixing cars...at all, but sometimes It feels as if the thumping is coming from the back, other times it feels like its coming from the front. Although the drums look fine.

Someone else also told me the rotors may be " warped" Is that the same thing as out of parallelis? I figured I would try to replace them, and if that doesn't work do you think it would be a good idea to replace the drums even though they look fine?

Thanks again!

Yes, they can still "look"new but the true reading comes from the brake lathe. I would take the rotors off and have them turned. Rear drums also. That eliminates any question of them being "true".

We use a dial indicator to measure that.

Nah, I'm not good at sarcasim. We all know what tools are required and I'm just tryin to help him get rid of the shaking. If he takes it to a shop, they should use an indicator to check the run out of each rotor- of course. But, if he's like most that visit this site, and want to do his own repairs, or HAS to do his own repairs, he wounaturally take both rotors and drums off and have them checked and resurfaced, thereby eliminating any question of those being the problem. That's all.

My quick check method for drums is take it out on the road, keep the E brk handle pulled so the brk wont stay engaged & use the E brk to slowly stop the vehicle.

If it stops smooth the drums are good, if you can feel a pulsation, they are warped as well...... I usually keep it under 30, any faster & the rear end locks up.....

My experience has been that even if the drums are warped, it usually translates to more noise than feel. The drum just flexes and never pumps back on the pedal. It just moved the shoes back and forth causing a clicking. Rear rotors will do it but the parking brake is not always associated with the pads.

Ya, that little trick is about worthless on rear rotors unless it's rear actuated calipers that use the pads for the E brk...

Can only guess without being there. Here and I hope illegal to sell them there was a line of "economy" rotors and drums that near all failed. Bad recycled metal. Some new out of the box showed flaws.

Box should state they were machined when new. Big cost difference for that and naturally people don't want to overspend but there are HUGE quality differences in brake parts.

IMO - you shouldn't have to machine a new rotor or drum and if you do the store owes you a new set and the pads if that's the issue,

Re: 1998 pontiac sunfire Loud " thumping " noise when pressing brakes Sign In

appreciate all the help guys.

Unfortunately I can't afford to be able to bring anything in to have it checked. My plan is to buy a set of front rotors, replace them. ( im starting with the front because It feels like its coming from the front drivers side) If that doesn't stop the bumping, I'm going to buy a set of drums and then replace those.

Is this a good idea?

It seems like it would be more expensive to go in and have my rotors/drums worked on anyways, but im not positive.

Oh and I already checked, the store refuses to replace them for me because its been about 6 months.

I would concentrate on the front. Drum brakes rarely cause this. I would be sure to replace the pads with the rotors or you will have problems there too.

Even if the pads are brand new as well ( about 5 months) ?

That doesn't matter. They have worn to the uneven surface of the old rotors and have to go now.
