1998 VW Jetta 3 makes clicking noise Sign In

Hi

My VW Jetta 3 1998 model (227 000 km on the clock) is making a clacking noise on the driver side front wheel like two pieces of metal being banged together. It also shudders like the wheel balancing is out. We had the wheel balancing done two times already.

It gets worse when going up hill or when pulling a trailer. Sound stops for a while after going over a bump.

We took it to a mechanic who replaced the ball joint but that did not clear the problem up.

Could it be the shocks?

Please help!

Just one post/thread please for same subject - other is gone. This seems more like a wheel bearing or CV joint issue. Surprised that a mechanic who did a ball joint didn't check for more on a complaint like this?

It's hard to second guess someone who's been right there. Why didn't you go right back with a repair that didn't solve the problem?

We did go back to him and now he says is the shocks. Don't want to spend money on something else that's not broken like with the ball joint.

I forgot to mention that the clacking speed increases when I accelerate.

Sounds like it could be a bad axle to me but as suggested, it needs to be looked at closer and verified.

Same - more likely bad axle/cv joints do get worse with load. May need shocks - just bounce up and down on it should show that easily or oil evidence more likely IMO for clunks than clicking noises.

Can't beat being right there for this type stuff. If you don't think this shop/person is up to this work find another. What floors me is taking a car in if you have described a noise or complaint and getting it back the same way and told it's something other than what was done that may have been needed or did it? Understood some things are found when doing work and to me that means call the customer as to what you found then not after handing it back to you.

Some lack of communication may be the problem?
