Year of vehicle 1985
Make of vehicle
Mazda
Model of vehicle GLC
Engine size 1.5 Lit
~160,000 Miles last time I looked, its an old car who knows for sure -_-

My problem started after letting the car sit for about two days, I went to drive it to work and as I realsed the parking break and reversed, I heard a lout POP, and noticed my break light on, it would not go off. Also, when the breaks were applied I would feel pulsation in the break pedal. I thought perhaps my fluid was low, and added more. The light has gone off, the pulsating has stopped. Fast foward two weeks, I heard another POP when reversing from another 2 days of not using the vehicle, this time I'm getting almost constant 'thumping', my first thought was a flat tire. It sounded like it came from the rear. I checked the tires, no flats. The noise is getting worse. Increased noise when I make right turns, a grinding and popping noise. The constant thumping does seem to stop when I do slight left turns.

My allignment is off, I have to correct to the right to drive straight [the wheel turns to the left when I don't hold it]. I replaced the brakes and rotors about a two and a half years ago, as well as new tires about two years ago. I am very limited when it comes to vehicle repair, but most of the stuff I have managed to repair on my own or with help of knowledgeable people to save money on labor.

I have been given a few ideas as to what it could be:
CV Drive Axel - But I'm pretty sure the noise is coming from the rear, although I do feel the thump very slightly in the floorboards, could it be the rear axel?
Rear Wheel Bearings - I'm told grinding and lots of noise can be bad bearings, but there is no play on tires when I checked them and there isn't any noticable pull when driving.

Warped Rotors?

I may end up giving in and taking the beast to the shop, but more than likely they'll fix more than I can afford =/ She's an old car but she still runs very well, I've had almost no issues, this is probably the worst so far. I really only use the car to drive to and from work, no more than 10 miles a day, 5 days a week, less on my weekends if at all.

Any help is appriciated!

Nobody is going to be able to ell you what happened to your car without inspecting it. Most shops will do a free brake inspection and I recommend doing that and see what they find. I can further advise you from there.

I came here looking for another educated guess. Taking it to the shop would eliminate the need for such a forum. Tongue

In any case, I did a more thorough inspection today and found it to be the rear wheel inner bearings on the driver side, completely mutilated. Turning to the left would relieve pressure on the wheel, making the 'thumping' stop. Did a quick clean, threw some new bearings and grease in there and everythings working fine now.

Thank you for the response, regardless. Wink

Now, wasn't that much easier and more accurate and we didn't even have to break out the crystal ball.

Thank you again for the witty and completely unhelpful response. I clearly stated I am very limited when it comes to repairing vehicles, I came here in hopes getting educated guesses so i could progress in the right direction.

You could have done as much as not reply at all, or at least add something beneficial to your post; a guess of what could have happened, reinforcement of the suggestions I had already been given, or a suggestion of your own rather than "take it to a shop and tell me what they say so I can say it, too", which basically tells me "take it to a real mechanic and tell me what they say so I can agree with them and look good".

We are here to offer the benefit of knowledge and advice, on our own time without compensation for that matter. In your vague description, you couldn't even tell us if it was coming from the front or the rear. Wild guesses are not the way we operate. We can advise you when given accurate facts which you are unable to do. When you are dealing with the possibility of brake failure, there is no room for guessing or "on the job" training for you. Regardless of your financial status, it may be completely unsafe to be on the highways. I advised you that brake inspections are usually free so I don't even see what your problem is with that advice.

I didn't even read this in full. Way2Old has the crystal ball and that's it!
