04 S10 Blazer 4x4 intermittent passenger side noise Sign In

My '04 S10 Blazer 4X4 4.3L with 70k mileage recently started giving an intermittent front passenger side noise when reaching a speed of 50+ MPH. When it first happened I pulled over to check the front tire expecting it to be low or flat, but it looked fine. Upon driving away, the noise did not happen again until a later drive, again when approching 50+ MPH.

The noise sounds as if a mudflap or playing card were flapping on the tire tread; a very fast sound that slowed as I slowed the car down to 0 MPH. There are no trouble codes generated, the Bridgestone Dueler tires have less than 10K on them, and the car will shift to 4WD no problem. At present, I've done nothing but research the problem on the net while not driving the car. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Check all your splash guards and inner fender wells and make the sure wind isn't lifting them and making them flap in the breeze or touch one of the tires.

Thanks for the quick reply! Much appreciated. I've already done a cursory check of the splash guard (should've mentioned it in my initial posting). I'm going to go back out and check more thoroughly. I would sure be happy to find such a small problem to be the case for such a scarey sound. Thanks again.

Hammer Time, I did another check of the front passenger side wheel well where the noise seemed to come from and everything is secure. Splash guards and inner well metal are all okay and tight. When the noise takes place there is no apparent associated vibration and the car is quite normal when the noise is not there. Could this be a front wheel drive issue as this is a 4x4 vehicle? A wheel/spindle bearing? Being an intermittent noise what would be your next educated guess?

The possibilities are endless here. Your going to have to somehow isolate where it's coming from. It can be coming from the differential, the wheel bearings or even the tires. If I heard the sound I could probably be a lot more helpful but i don't have that benefit.

Yepper, this is a tricky one indeed. It sure sounds like a tire... but intermittent? I drove it today and there was no problem. The car was fine and did not make the noise. I took my neighbor for a ride so he might listen and clue me in... tell me what he thinks, but alas, no noise that time either. Oh well. Thankyou for your prompt responses, HT. Much appreciated.

If a tire is suspect - rotate tires and see if the problem follows the wheel and tire,

The tires are due for rotation. I think I'll follow your advice. Thanks TG.

It's a win-win to try that then and it rules out a loose wheel (lug nuts) for doing that. Don't ignore noises. I'm sure you know it could be just something annoying or real trouble. Guys here are real sharp but with noises there's nothing like being there and witnessing it,

Yeah, TG, its got me very concerned as it could be a possible dangerous situation or maybe a problem that could cause some serious damage. It'll be Thursday before I can get the tires rotated and I am also going to have the front wheel drive portion of the 4WD's lubes checked. Don't need a thirsty transfer case or differential.

Hope you all had a great holiday weekend. Lots of appreciation for the attention you've paid to my problem! Oh, and I like your cat and the American flag GIF. I've got two cats myself.
