2002 Mercury Cougar: Very loud, metal popping, catching noise...ok, it sounds like the wheel is about to break off. Worse in reverse or turning either direction. I hit a curb some 3 months ago and replaced the lower right control arm and the ball joint. The car has since gone thru 3 sets of tires. It was recently suggested I had a bent strut however, suddenly these loud noises started and within 1 day the car became undrivable. When in reverse it feels like the hands of God reach down and prevent the car from moving. I have heard ball bearing, cv joint and even transmission....does anyone have any solid suggestions? Help! solid suggestions

The only one that I have for you is too take the car in and have it diagnosed. With the car chewing up three sets of tires, the noises and now having difficulty steering; you know you have some major issues up there. Yours or other people’s safety may be at risk if you keep driving the car the way it is.
There are so many different items in the front suspension and steering mechanism that could be causing this that I have no idea which item(s) are at fault without doing an inspection to determine what it is for sure. All I’d be able to do from here is list the “could be’s” and the way it sounds in your post you’re well past the could be stage.
Sorry wish I could say it’s this or that but I can’t.
Take the car in and post back with their finds. Just remember the safety aspect of this not just the monetary one; in other words fix it or park it.
Dan.
