I had the belts changed on my 2004 Infiniti G35 6-Speed Sedan according to the mechanics advice (they were cracked quite a bit). Now that they're changed they make an annoying squeaking noise which is particularly awful when idling with my windows open. When I took it back, he said the pulleys need to be replaced and they are already at maximum tension. They did not squeak before the replacement. Is he right? Or did he just put in a belt that's longer than it should be?

Take it back and ask for another set of belts if this shop suggested they were ready and now make noise either wrong in some way or some cheap brands you just can't make quiet. Ask for another brand - some plain brag about being quiet belts,

PMFJI. Complete noob to the forum, but I have played with (and abused Frown) belts over many years. Amateur only, but hey they are usually the toughest. I haved recently had a possibly similar problem.

By "squeak" do you mean a sort of whirring noise, or a constant or intermittent squeal? Squeaky belts usually are worse under load than when idling. They squeak because they slip. If they squeak at idle IME they _usually_ do it more while you speed up the engine. This is what you hear sometime as some guy pulls away from the lights.

A whirring can indicate a _tight_ belt: the belt "sticks" to the over-pressured pulley. I have not ever heard of the need to replace pulleys to stop belts slipping. Max settings arte because of stretched belts. If the belts are at max settings, maybe they are over tightened. And I am talking some pretty old cars and motors.

If there is a squeal and it's intermittent (ssst ssst ssst ssst ), that would say to me that belt(s) have contaminent on them: oil etc, in patches. If the squeal is constant, and the tension is at max, then I would be thinking that the wrong length belt(s) have been used. As I say I have never experienced pullery wear as a reason for slipping belts.

There are so many variables, I would suggest throwing yourself at the mercy of another mechanic. A quick check should not cost much. Don't tell the whole story. Just ask WTH is wrong. If the guy susses that you are looking for a second opinion then at least you know he's sharp! If he says you need the pulleys or belts replacing then you know it's probably BS Wink

Thank you both! I did take it back to the shop and they replaced the belt and it's stopped the noise.

Great - sounds like that was it. Thanks for reporting the fix and will close thread as solved to keep spammers out. You may request any moderator to re-open the thread,
