Hey all,
I have a 1997 Hyundai elantra wagon. 1.8l, 4 cyl, 175k miles. It had broken down with fuel issues, which have been resolved, and it sat for a month. Now when I push the brake pedal, it pushes back. This has never happened before, and only started after it sat. It still stops, but I'm wondering if this is something that will go away, and happened because it sat, or if I need to do something. Disc brakes on the front, drum on the rear. Thanks!

It sounds like the ABS may be having a false activation. This happens when one of the wheel speed sensors is not accurate at low speeds and the ABS module reads that as a brake lockup and activates the ABS to release the brake at that wheel. It will take a professional scan tool that can capture frame by frame data of the speed sensors to determine which wheel.

Subject line and script don't match? Is the pedal just vibrating/pulsating like a rusty spot or smooth and doesn't feel right or fast pulsing? It a fault with ABS I would think you would have a warning light on. If very light gun rust and only used it a couple times it may go away IF IT IS JUST THAT.

Not sure what you really mean by saying brake pedal pushes back at you? One month usually isn't long enough for a rust issue and they will get that gun rust, more if parked over dirt/grass or non pavement.

So I'm not sure what is really happening. Can you describe it again or if you suspect rust it would be rotors and some you can see the spot thru the wheel or some take a front wheel off and spin it looking for a spot. What I'm talking about is it will rust (they do anyway a little) under brake pads differently than the exposed part of a rotor. You should easily see that if it is that at all.

That is a problem with even brand new cars that don't get moved around a bit before they sell them!

Will it go away? Depends on just what has happened. I really doubt rust would be that fast but if it was real wet who knows?

BTW - what I'm talking about is much slower to drum brakes than disc. If an ABS problem just from a month of sitting it's unusual to me or just bad luck,
