Rotors Sign In

Hi everyone,
So I'm gonna swap out my brake rotors. I'm just wandering do I have to get them shaved. They're brand new and so are the pads. The rear brakes are drums but Im not going to swap them out.

No, you shouldn't have to resurface the new rotors. Make sure you clean them good with Brakekleen to get all the protective oil off.

Re: Rotors Sign In

Some used to come with goo on them but all around here are vacuum packed and ready to go. I still think it's worth just a quick wipe with "Brakleen"............... any could do but this is popular............ If new ones needed machining they aren't very good ones!

Re: Rotors Sign In

Every rotor I've bought in the last 10 years has had an oil coating on it that has to be cleaned off.

Re: Rotors Sign In

comoline? Whatever. I've been buying Centric (not cheap) and they are ready to use. Some did used to this gooey stuff, claimed you could and should use soap and water but never did - used brake cleaner. The "Centric" brand said they were cut to new specs and you could see it. Rotors and drums by that name has a nice baked on paint on the non friction surfaces which helps with the rust scene. More bucks but last longer so not really any more in a 'keeper' vehicle -- T

Cosmoline is the rust preventative they put on the rotors.

Re: Rotors Sign In

Cosmoline used to be that thick film they used to put on a lot of metal part for shipping but I think most all of them switched to light oil in the past decade.
