Problem with brakes - had them fixed 8 months ago Sign In

1996 Geo Prism 182,000 miles. The brake pedal is sinking almost to the floor. I won't drive it now for safety reasons. I had a full FRONT brake job done 9-18-13. It included front pack, rotors and calipers. The out the door price was $336.00. Now I also have a 2003 Hyundai Sonata which is my main car and I'm retired so I don't drive that car more than 400 miles per month. I usually drive the Prism for highway rides because it gets good mileage and the Sonata for around town. Get my point - the Prism brakes aren't being used heavily. I trust my mechanic however he started his 20 something slacker son working in the shop the last few years -- lucky me... I believe he did the brake job. My question is how long should brake jobs last? Could it just be the back brakes that are the problem? Obviously I'l take it back to the father who's a good and honest man. But if it should last longer than 8 months then I will require them to fix the problem at no charge. I have never had a problem with the owner in 10 years. Sometimes he even does little jobs like fixing a noise or putting on a door handle for me for free. Thanks for your input.

I wouldn't be so hasty to place blame on someone that did work on your vehicle 8 months ago. You don't even know what the problem is. You should have it checked out. It could be a master cylinder that went bad or a brake fluid leak.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I blame him and obviously I have to get it checked out... Can someone give me some basic information? What I'm asking is on a replacement brake job, roughly how long should it last - under normal city driving conditions - without a detailed scientific study.

Worn out brakes is not your problem. You have a hydraulic issue somewhere that really shouldn't have anything to do with the front brake job.

Is that usually a high ticket repair item? Give me a price range on a car like mine repair bill f you can. I won't hunt you down if you're off by a certain amount -I'm trying to get a feel for where I would end up at based on your assumption.

How can we give you a price range when you don't know what is wrong with it? You should take it to the shop and have it checked out. They should be able to give you an estimate.
