Is it safe to temporarily drive with a bad caliper? Sign In

Hi and thanks for taking the time to read this.

My wife was on her way to minnesota from milwaukee(about a 6 hour drive) when she started hearing a grinding type noise. When she got there she took it into a local shop and they told her the left rear brake pad, rotor, and caliper need to be replaced. They quoted her $600.00. I have a friend who is a mechanic at home (milwaukee) who will do it for a fraction of the price. My questions is:

1. Is it safe for her to drive it home if shes just going to be on the freeway and not be braking so often?
2. Could she damage the car more?
3. $600 seems like a lot to replace those things in only 1 tire, is this guy trying to rip my wife off?

I would prefer if she drove it home so we could save some money as we dont have a lot right now, but I also want her to be safe. She doesnt need to come home until 08/07/2013 so any help before then would be appreciated.

Thanks for any help

Thomas

I don't think we should ever suggest driving a car with a known problem like that! If just one went bad you should still service both the same on that axle. Doing just one side would be really unprofessional.

Not knowing what kind of vehicle this is I could guess at the costs or how extensive the work needs to be. I think we know the costs of an accident never mind the car but how about injury or killing someone, need I expound?

I agree, it will likely do a lot more damage and I too question the prices. Why doesn't she just go get a second opinion.

tplee:

What can happen is if both the pads and rotor are worn enough the piston(s) of them can come out too far and either cock stuck or plain blow out and loss of fluid hence braking is just about lost completely all at once.

That and it being just one apparently suggest that side has a problem the other doesn't and probably frozen in some way. That can overheat, boil the brake fluid and again loss of braking action.

We aren't there for the call but it's a no brainer - NO. Price seems high as HT suggested if an ordinary vehicle but we don't know that or I missed it. Have her go somewhere else but limit driving it at all or don't at all,

If she's driving from Milwaukee to Minnesota maybe we can volunteer Nick to do the work. Cool
